There are a couple of obvious benefits..

1) Far less expensive than a new distributor.
2) Far more reliable than the Mitsushitsi produced distributor (OEM disty)
3) Potentially better spark equalling greater ignition, which of course results in more power and better fuel economy.
4) Its freaking cool as heck
5) Its sexy and will improve your overall attractiveness to the ladies.
6) Do I really need to go on? ;)

Tunes67
tunes is right, a new distributor cost anywhere from 200-300 dollars (note yes there are ones that are 150 but i'm talking quality not some refurbished pos that will fell within a few weeks/months) You'll spend roughly 100 dollars this mod. and the main parts are the ignition control module nad the coil. The key is that when your oem disty goes out its usually because of these 2 elements. And your spending 200-300 for a good one every time. Now with teh hei/external coil mod, if either goes out you wont be spending 200-300 dollars you'll spend at the most another 100 but typically 15-55. Making your setup easier on the pockets and more reliable. Not only that but the coil in the mx-3 is weak anyway, which will effect the over all performance.

Here are 2 dynos both done with the stock oem disty

Image

Note the extreme jagginess of the curve, according to the dyno techs/tuners it can be caused by weak ignition system, and considering the dyno they use has produced clean smooth curves i believe what they are saying is true. Now both dynos were done with basically the exact same parts, the only difference was Engine, ecu, and Plugs. (kf had kf15ecu with accell wires and iridium plugs, klze has kl36 ecu with accell wires and oem plugs) Both are using the exact same disty litterally, the exact same one. and they both have rough jagginess edges. I will be returning to the dyno soon as i get a few miles on teh setup and insure its reliable, I am not going to show it imporves hp/torque as i will see an increase anyway due to weather conditions then and weather conditions now, I am going to mearly show that it does help the curve and provides a better spark.

Hope that helped you some

heh it's worse when you are married... trust me Unless you somehow got incredibly lucky and married a girl who's into car stuff, all this mod gets you is a pat on the head and a 'that's nice dear'

She's more likely to be impressed that you saved a few hundred over the cost of a new distributor (whatever that is), so she can spend the money on (<insert_spousal_spending_obsession_here>)
{sigh} Time to move on

if you look in the v6 FAQ there is a parts list, easily found if the search function is used

Yea the HEI mod will deffantly give you a hell of alot more spark but then again it's not accurate as I have been told say for instance you'll be getting 10 amps of spark on cyl. no.1 you might be getting 5 amps on cyl.5 or you can get spark jump where as your rotor connects at cyl. no. 3 It can jump inside the cap to no.5 causing predetonation. I think I'm going to stay with O.E. Disty for now maybe try to find a way to accuratize it.
