mazda rx7 will only be in our memories soon

Post by Sean Mandell »

I know that everyone is anticipating a rx-7 revamp but I think that the mazdaspeed rx-8 is going to be better. It might have 4 doors but it doesnt look like a sedan. even carreras have 4 seats. maybe in 5 years you might see an aniversary edition of the rx-7 but I think if mazda started saying that an rx-7 is coming back, it would ruin the rx-8s parade. I will never forget the 7 but the mazdaspeed 8 helps a bit. expecially if turboed. ;)

i don't see the rx-8 having turbo's. reason is...there is NO room under that hood. the rx-8 is being marketed towards the family man sports enthusiast. i don't think it will have an affect on the rx-7 sales, especially if the new rx-7 is still a 2-seater.

No Plans to Revive RX-7, Mazda Insists

Those expecting to glimpse a new rotary-powered Mazda sports car at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show will be in for a serious disappointment, several senior Mazda officials tell TheCarConnection.com. It's not that the automaker isn't exploring the idea of reviving its legendary two-seater, which went out of production last year. For the moment, though, it has its corporate hands full with the new four-seat RX-8, which is just in the midst of a global launch. There's another problem, stresses Mazda Motors Board Member Steve Odell: limited production capacity for the new Renesis rotary engine. There's only capacity for 60,000 of the engines a year, he notes, around what Mazda hopes to need for the RX-8, and expanding production would be "quite difficult." Translation: extremely expensive. But there is a future for the rotary, he adds. "I'm sure we'd like" to produce other rotary-powered models, including a new RX-7, "if the demand is there." A solid hit with the new car could be the encouragement Mazda needs. -Paul A. Eisenstein

The Rx8's Renesis engine is the same size as every Rx7 engine since 1986 (and optional on the GSL-SE '84 and '85's).

The only smaller rotary engine was in the 1979-1985 run that had the 1.2 liter 12a. Everything since then has been the 13b 1.3 liter either in turbo, twin-turbo, or N/A.

There is enough room under the hood of my RX-8 to raise a small family.
Seriously, you could put another engine in there next to the 13b.
There is a lot of plastic stuff, but it is all fluff. You could easily put a twin in there.
However, I don't think the 13b-MSP is going to be very boost-tolerant. It is already pretty high strung.
I think I may be able to pull another 50 HP or so out of it just with tuning, though.

there is a thread (in general mazda I think) about an artical I read about Mazda planning on building a supercharged RX8.
Also rumours of an HKS turbo kit for it as well.
