Engine Knock
Engine Knock
I have a slight engine knock in the rear middle cylinder I think. I looked arround and found that it is caused by a HLA? That the same thing as a lifter? Is it on top of the head? Easy to replace? Cost?

Re: Engine Knock
You're correct, it's the HLA.
It's expensive to have done by itself but you can have it taken care of during your next timing belt change.
Getting to the HLA (Hydraulic Lifters *dunno what the "A" is for Adjusters(?)*)requires removal of the timing belt.
Sorry, that's probably not what you wanted to hear. Meanwhile, just keep fresh oil in it.
[ August 25, 2002: Message edited by: mjlohman ]

if your not familiar with the HLA,
http://crco.com/solid_lash_adjuster_theory.htm
I may be wrong, but I believe we have a similar setup on Mazda motors.

Re: Engine Knock
I don't care what anyone says. It's the f---ing camshaft friction gear (about $1100 candian to fix at a mazda dealership). Trust me man, it's not the HLA's. I had the exact same problem you, i took like 2-3 weeks reading about every single thread pertaining to 'ticking'...i thought for sure it was the lifters or bent valves.
HOWEVER, it will not hurt your engine to not get it fixed. It's just annoying as hell. I know you still going to think it's the HLA's...but it's not. Take it to Mazda and they will tell you the exact same thing im telling you. Trust me!
