Cleaning engine at dissasembly

Hey guys,

What is the BEST way to clean your block and components??



Ive heard of hot tanking, degreasing, even glass beading...

I'm not too keen on the glass beading because there is no way of being sure that there isnt any in the oil galleries and coolant passages.

Hot tanking ive heard cannot be done on aluminum because it is a caustic process and will eat away at the aluminum.

And degreasing takes way too damn long lol

Degreaser is my favored method, soaking it in a 4:1 mix for 48 hours will get you a CLEEEEAAAANNN head.

It'll probably take less time, but it's easy to remember 2 days.

You'll want to scrape gasket mating surfaces first(please, use a flat bladed gasket scraper)

There are a variety of 'hot tank' cleaning solutions. Ultrasonics is good as well if you can find a place that does that. Some people use brake cleaner, I find Gunk engine degreaser works well and washes off with water.

I dont mind spending the money to get it done professionally, I just want %100 insurance that i dont have any contaminants in the block..

You could steam clean it, but I haven't seen anybody do that with a disassembled engine.

I can personally attest to the effectiveness of soaking engine parts in degreaser though.

Any engine shop with a hot tank will have the ability to do aluminum and your engine will be as clean as it can be. Period.

when i did my rebuild i just used the gunk engine cleaner and a wire brush then hot water pressure wiashed it and after i honed the cylinders i used tide laundry detergant of all things to make sure i got every thing clean as a wistle
