Battery question

Post by kulluminati777 »

I got a optima battery for free the part number is 8002-002 and the model number is 34. I looked on the website and its not the right one for the car but it was FREE. Can i use it? The battery is about 5lbs heavier and its made for water pumps that have a smaller engine than ours. On the site the numbers didnt seem too different but im not gonna lie i didnt understand what the hell i was looking at anyway lol

You wont fry anything using a different 12v battery... The differences between the batteries relate to their dimensions (how tall/length width)... Top post/side post and what side the positive and negative are on... Also reserve capacity and cold cranking amps...

If its a 12v battery, it fits/clears the hood(really be careful with that) your terminals hook up then its should work fine...

If it starts the car, you're good. What are the cold cranking amps on it? If it cranks slow, it could wear out prematurely, which isn't so bad if it was free.

Optimas usually sit lower than regular batteries, that's why the top cover actually works as a stand underneath it

Ironicly, I went to put a Redtop 34 into the Rx8 yesterday, but it sat too long and doesn't hold enough CCA to start the car.

WHere the red top came from? My Mx-3! Was one of the replacements I replaced once the Mx-3 got off the road since I had worn mine down over the years from car shows. Ran dual redtops too. The one unused replacement was sold in the part out , the other, ran in my buddy's K20 EG for a bit, than pretty much just sat unsold in my grandmothers garage with a small solar panel on it. Guess it wasn't enough. 5 year warranty, so should be good for a replacement still.

One of my yellow tops in the Xterra was actually in the Mx-3 for a bit. I bought 2 yellows to replace the reds while the red were way getting warrantied. One of the other yellows were sold as well in the part out

The following charging methods are recommended to ensure a long battery life:
(Always use a voltage regulated charger with voltage limits set as described below.)

Model: 34 and 34R
These batteries are designed for engine starting applications. They are not recommended or warranted for use in deep cycle applications.
Recommended Charging Information
Alternator: 13.3 to 15.0 volts; no amperage limit
Battery Charger: 13.8 to 15.0 volts; 10 amps maximum; 6-12 hours approximate
Float Charge: 13.2 to 13.8 volts; 1 amp maximum current (indefinite time at lower voltages)
Rapid Recharge (Constant voltage charger): Maximum voltage 15.6 volts. No current limit as long as battery temperature remains below 125°F (51.7°C). Charge until current drops below 1 amp. All limits must be strictly adhered to.
