sunroof leak, need help
My sunroof started leaking recently, i think the rubber seal just doesn't hold the water anymore. Does anyone know where I can buy one, semi cheap. From the dealer its $140, so if anyone knows where i get one cheaper, or at least know the part number, please let me know
thanks

Re: sunroof leak, need help
its probably not the seal on the sunroof, it will be the drain tubes that run down the a and b pillars. usually the front tubes get plugged with junk and it backs the water up into the frame which then leaks into the car. the tubes come out behind the front fenders, it will be about 3" of tube sticking out from the body. stick a air hose in the top of the tubes in each coner and blow them out, might make a mess and blow back some goo. give it a shot.

Re: sunroof leak, need help
This is true. When I first got my car, I was literally having buckets of water dumped on me through my headliner. Somebody had installed an aftermarket sunroof at some point in time and hadn't bothered to run the 4 drain hoses, so the water just collected in the plastic well that runs around the sunroof underneath, and then spilled over. Running those hoses was not a fun job.Dali wrote:its probably not the seal on the sunroof, it will be the drain tubes that run down the a and b pillars. usually the front tubes get plugged with junk and it backs the water up into the frame which then leaks into the car. the tubes come out behind the front fenders, it will be about 3" of tube sticking out from the body. stick a air hose in the top of the tubes in each coner and blow them out, might make a mess and blow back some goo. give it a shot.
Only thing is though, that water shouldn't really be getting into that well unless there's a leak in the seal, or the sunroof is open. The drain hoses really are only there as a last line of defense.
The switch for my sunroof was fried because of the water leaking in, so it turned out that my sunroof wasn't actually closed all the way.
I would tend to think that you could have a leak, but the hoses being plugged is also another possibility.

Re: sunroof leak, need help
Any part you decide to change with the sunroof just go down to your local Junk Yard and take it off a MX3 Sunroof. No need to pay for a brand new one unless you really want to...

Finding the front drain tubes
I had this problem, my MX-3 started leaking onto the passenger seat and into the footwell. I have a cracked windscreen and the cowel rubber seal at the bottom of the windshield is loose, I thought that was the problem and since the car has been off the road for a while I used a cover.
This year I removed the cover and forgot about the leak. Anyway found about 1" of water in the footwell and it was actually the roof liner that was soaking wet. Came to this site again and found out about the drain.
SOLUTION
I don't have any fancy tools, pulled off the inside A pillar covers and found the black drain tube,
flushed out the inside of the front wing with the hose from the front of the door opening. After all the dead leaves and crap were removed I saw the bottom end of the drain tube.
I filled the area around the drain in the sunroof opening with water and squeezed the tube hard to push some of the gunk out the top and removed debris that was released with a scredriver and rag.
To get to the lower end of the train tube you have to go to the wheel well, and remove 2 plastic clips 1 metal/plastic clip and a metal screw and washer so the wheel well lining can be pulled back. I now have easier access to the lower tube.
I don't have any fancy tools, there just happened to be some long thin vine roots that had spread under the car, I pushed this up the tube till the blockage broke and water came gushing out. (you can probably use a thin piece of electrical wire to do the same thing.
Poured water in the top, water gushed out the wheel well, So all is good. Put it all back together in reverse order to how you dismantled it.
A bit lengthy, but I hope that helps anyone that comes by with the same problem.

Wow tysoe joined in 2001 and only 47 posts and a sunroof leak makes it 48. Man talk about lurking, this brings lurking to a whole new level.
That's like only 5 posts a year. Oh ya my sunroof leaks but only from the passengers side so I need to clean my tubes too.

Would this be under body in the online manuals for the sunroof drain tubes?

So many people have this problem this should almost be in the FAQ. Great write up tysoe
