FWD rotary engine MX3 swap?

Post by Juans_93_MX3 »

I understand no-one has done such swap. Today I was at the junkyard though, seen a RX7 and thought to myself, how hard can such a swap be.
I know there have been noobies coming in and out of MX-3.com asking about such swap.

But today really made me think, maybe its not as hard or expensive as it seems (if you know how to fabricate)
- You swap out the wiring harness. Keep the same FWD MX3 MTX tranny. You make a custom adapter plate for the flywheel to fit on the rotary engine, aswell as a adapter to let the tranny mate with the engine.
- Fabricate a cross member. Use the same engine mounts
- Make 2 adapter plates (for each side of the tranny, and front and back engine mount) and fit it to the tranny.
- Keep the same driver's side engine mount.
- As for the passenger side engine mount. Keep that and maybe make a bar that goes to it. This bar will go down and make a "L" headed toward underneath the engine. I havent taken a good look at the rotary engine but maybe make another adapter plate underneath the rotary engine that will connect to this "L"
- Swap ECUs and wiring.
- Keep tranny in the same position.

I hear of people with Hondas do crazy swaps. H22A swaps to CRXs. They go through alot of trouble.
How hard and expensive can a Rotary swap be on a MX3?
Obviously, it wont be your usual weekend swap.
Its not like you have to build a chassis for a FWD Rotary setup though

Besides the engine, ecu, wiring and fabricating. A bigger fuel pump would be needed.

What do you all think?
Those rotary engines are really small. The 13B-REW make about 255hp and 220ft torque. If I am correct, that is turbo charged.
With a full aftermarket exhaust, bigger turbo, I bet they can make really good power.
The only thing left to worry is how much these engine cost?

If you're gunna go through that much trouble, you should go the extra mile and put in a AWD or RWD platform, IMO. An AWD Rotary MX3 would be ridiculous and anyone who completed it would be more than unique.

You could build up a DE, turbo it. Easier and would be alot quicker/cheaper.

Not worth it.

RWD motor in a FWD car... no meant to work.

Sure honda guys do crazy swaps, but they are using FWD motors. Not worth your time

There have been a few Wenkel MX-3s, but FWD would be unique.
I wouldn't do it.
AWD would be awesome.

The S2000 conversion MX-3 did not have a rotary in it.

There was an MX-3 with a 13B-REW in it on eBay but it was hacked up everywhere and had a tube front. No way you can do the swap and keep the car normal looking still. I'd rather just go out and get an FD. Much better looking anyways, still unique, cheaper, and handles a million times better.

Its possible that we're talking about different red MX-3s with S2000 front ends but not likely haha. Its not very common to see you know what I mean. Its possible though, I've just only seen one red MX with that conversion.

I remember a red one. It had s2000 head lights, and actual supra tails. 5 lug conversion (unfinished) and it was rear wheel. The entire inside of the car was red. There was a not-so-pleasant driveshaft hump. it was all boxy and not round. IT also had aftermarket gauges too.

I think this is the one boosted is referring to.

I don't see why anyone would shoot this idea down. Juan is absolutely right, if you can find a reliable way to mate the transmission to the motor there shouldn't be any problem as long as you have at least basic fabrication skills. It would be WAY more difficult to do a RWD or AWD conversion. As long as the motor will physically fit in the engine bay there is no reason to make a full tube frame or modify the frame substantially. I think everyone's just gotten too comfortable with their direct ZE/DE swaps. I've only ever done 2 engine swaps and I could probably complete a ZE swap in 2 days if I had someone around to help, that just shows how easy it is. I don't understand why people are afraid to fabricate their own stuff.
