Your favourite Car to build on under 5k?

Post by cabriolet »

Taking into account reliability, power/ potential, driving in the winter, and being a daily driver.

Make mine a 2nd gen RX-7 ;) Though I have serious doubts that ANY custom car build can actually stay under 5k ;)

I will take the 240SX
Not talking about looks, that car is doped but it can look nice too.
With a SR20DET motor swap you get a 200hp rear-wheel drive, and it has so much potential. The ease of getting parts and expert advice is also a plus. Although I personally really like the FC, I just wish I could, buti don't have the time and money to maintain a rotary for a daily driver cuz I have to drive a lot.

Miatas are nice, but two seater and so lightweight it doesnt do me much.
Everything else, Hondas are nono, and celicas not a fan of.

O ... I dont mean having everything done under 5k
With the ridiculous market price out there for cars, it will take 5k to get a car from

And lets say we had unlimited budget to build 8)

Yeah I probably should clarify my choice there a bit more.. see.. I wouldnt keep the rotary.. I'd drop in a LT1 Chev Small Block with a Camaro 6spd transmission. I think I'd have a harder time keeping the car between the white lines than finding parts for it ;)

Well, it's not anywhere near the list, but if you can put a Mustang on... I just got a completely overhauled Mercedes 450SLC on ebay for $1,925, and plan to hop it up a bit. I've seen one with a 6.9 Liter twin turbo! FTW, for sure! In case you don't know, this car has an aluminum overhead cam V8. I had one before, and loved when ricers would flash their lights on the freeway!

My G/f has a Celica, and I had alot of fun with an RX-7 when I lived in Hawai'i, so I can't be biased. All fun cars!
The funnest car I had was bought for $75. It was a 73 Olds Cutlass with a blueprinted "Rocket" 350. We cut the roof off (lived in AZ), and painted cartoons all over it, and added a pink Flamingo hood ornament, and pop rivited round solid aluminum sheet metal to the rally rim covers for a "Mad Max" look . There wasn't a body panel without a dent. I would run up the back, 1 foot on the bumper, 1 just above the rear window, and drop into the driver's side, and start it, all in 3 seconds. I let 3 people who were driving like idiots hit me, and they never wanted the police involved.
Once, I went to the state fair, and they said "The demolition Derby entrance is over there"!
The car was legendary.
The lower ball joint gave out on the Freeway in Cali, when I was going about my usual (at the time) 95 mph.
R.I.P. buddy.
