No Heat / Temp Issue very odd
No Heat / Temp Issue very odd
Ok for the past 2 months my car has been some very wierd stuff and just wondering if anyone can shed some light on it. Before i just take it to a mechanic.
Here is the issue;
I have no heat in my car till its been running for about 1/2 hour and even then the heat comes on and off?? if i rev my car at really high RPMS i can get heat faster into the car.
Also my temperature in the vehical is going crazy the guage is some times pinned out to the top then comes back down again it seems to fluxuate with the heat that comes in the vehical??
If anyone can help please let me know!

how cold is it where you live right now? id diffentely check your coolant that was my problem and fits your discription of the temp gauge going up as you accel or try and get heat. check my post about a week ago it should explain how to go through the process to see if its pumping or not. but i rmemeber as i was driving the temp gauge would go up as the heat was at 4 but if i turned it off and didnt drive the car so hard it would go down to normal. id start there if anything

Re: No Heat / Temp Issue very odd
This may be the key here. What sort if any maintenance has been done to your cooling system since you said this has been going on for a few months?dreckis wrote: Also my temperature in the vehical is going crazy the guage is some times pinned out to the top then comes back down again it seems to fluxuate with the heat that comes in the vehical??
How full is your coolant reservoir?
Last time coolant system has been flushed or maintenance done?
Last time thermostat was changed?
Last time water pump was changed?
Has coolant thermosensor connections been checked?
Are control cables/actuators for temp selection on HVAC working - complete on and off full range movement?

Just to anserw the questions here yea go!
How full is your coolant reservoir? Is full
Last time coolant system has been flushed or maintenance done? I had it done last year
Last time thermostat was changed? I dont know
Last time water pump was changed? 3 months ago
Has coolant thermosensor connections been checked? I havent checked the sensor yet were is it located??
Are control cables/actuators for temp selection on HVAC working - complete on and off full range movement? controls are working fine
I am having troubles locating the thermostat. The top hose running from the rad to the block i cant seem to locate the thermostat ANY were. Can some one help?

assuming it's a gs it will be located on the drivers side of the engine. look down a couple of inches in front of the throttle body. Or just behind the distributor. Look in the on line manual under heating/cooloing section. It will show it better then I'm explaining it. You'll have to remove the corigated boot hose thing from the throtle body.

http://www.mx-3.com/index.cfm - left column under technical info. Changing the thermostat is really quite simple on the MX. Once the flexable intake tubing between the airbox and the TB is removed you'll have lots of free room to get at it. Following the drivers side rad hose to it or as twoie has explained should do it. The online manual should make it quite easy. Beside and on the coolant filler neck on the passenger side is where the thermosensors reside and again specific info for those is also in the Online shop manual. If your familiar with bleeding a coling system of possible air pockets, that too is in some past posts - try "purging" or "pockets" as search parameters for those threads and also "thermosensor". I might want to try that first, but not knowing the history of the thermostat, that would also be a good place to focus on. g/ldreckis wrote:do you know were the online manuel is and thanks i was looking on the passenger side. Is it easy to be accessed?? im hoping ic an do this by my self.

When you had the coolant serviced did they drain and refill or flush it?
You are getting a clog somewhere. It could be the thermostat not opening and closing properly or it could be a clog somewhere else (probably in the heater core) Do not drive the car hard and do not rev it up. If you get a clog and rev it the water pump will increase in pressure and then it will blow a gasket somewere (usually the head gasket is the first thing to go when you over pressurize the system = big money)
Change the thermostat first, do a coolant flush and refill just to make sure, and then run the car easily to see if the problem continues. Like John said make sure you purge the system of all the air b/c it will cause the coolant to quit flowing and the car will overheat.
DO NOT EVER let the thermostat guage in the car go up. The heads on the MX-3 are made from aluminum and will break, warp or blow a gasket VERY easily. This usually means you need a new motor. If the temp goes past half way turn the car off and quit driving it untill you find out why it started to overheat.

if I can add just a little "tid bit" here, Im not possitive that that water pump would create that much pressure, i believe you can actually close both ends of a water pump and all it would to is "twirl" the water around since a cars pump is only a "circulater".
but like PATDIESEL said, be carefull not to let your car overheat.
I had a bad clogged heater core and had all the symptoms you have.
I replaced it and i am getting sufficiant heat now. But like the guys said, work on the thermostat first.
keep us up to date.
