Which tranny for bp swap?

Post by projectmx »

I was wondering if there is a difference in the protege f series and the escort f series trannies? cause i am hopefully doing my bp swap in the next two months and want to get the right trans i know they are basically the same but i figured since there are small engine differences there might also be a small trans difference.. are there different gear ratios? is one stronger than the other? is there a particular year that is a bit "better"? also do i need to get different hubs when i swap the trans and axles? i've read tons of varying opinions in my time searching so some concrete help would be great.. thanks all..

Well I'm not sue if the same Escort your talking about (91-96 GT) had an F series gearbox. The GT's all had a G series gearbox with a 4:10 final gearing ratio. There were Protege's that had the F and the G. The SOHC 1.8 engines had the F, while the twin cam LX models carried the G series. No particular year is really better than the other, but when comparing an F and G, the G is the choice most people opt for. Lower gearing and they can withstand some abuse up to a point. This would be a great gearbox for smaller turbos because of it's gearing. However, it's not great for highway use because in 5th gear, you might wish you had a 6th. :? The F series from the sohc Protege would bolt up and there are clutch's, flywheels, differentials available for it. The gearing is better suited for highway use with these (F) but I don't think anyone has really been influenced to use it. I don't know why, but I think rumors and myths have spread far and wide to avoid using the F series. I'm still looking into it..

No need to swap hubs with the G series. The Mx-3 hubs are the same as the Protege's and Escorts. You will need the axles from the Protege or Escort and the stub shaft for the passenger side.
