new v6

Post by swanseav6 »

Hi peeps I have just bought a 1993 V6 MX-3 (jap import) first things first, what an awesome engine, the noise as it hits 7500rpm has to be heard........just a few questions, does the jap import differ from the regular UK models, besides having air con as standard. And wht is VRIS, i have tried a search but come up with nothing??
cheers guys
First time i heard that v6 scream upto 7500rpm.............i think i wet myself

The jdm mx3's have 140hp as opposed to 130hp here in north america. Not sure but i think a stock uk mx3 would have 130hp as well. Other then that, there is not much difference.

vris is mazdas version of vtec. Thats why when you hit about 4000rpm you can feel an extra kick in the engine.

cheers for the quick reply, what does vris stand for? as soon as you hit 4000rpm, esprcially with a cold air induction kit, the engine goes nuts and really flies. Shame there arent many performance parts out there for these cars

I believe it's actually 135hp...The K8's here redline at 7000rpms,

Im having my car dyno tested this weekend so will be able to tell u all how much it is putting out, although it is fitted with a stainless steel exhaust and induction kit, so will prob be slightly higher than stock, any ideas why the jap model produces more power? it surely cant just be due to the higher rev limit can it???

VRIS is Variable Resonance Induction System. It uses various intake manifold paths at various RPM's to give you more torque at lower RPMs than it would provide normally.

thanks for the explanation, if thats the case then it isnt like the honda Vtec system which changes camshafts at higher revs for more power? does anyone have definitive performance figures? i have seen so many differnt figures for these cars i dont know what to believe????????????

Right. It gives a similar effect on a dyno as VTEC, but a completely different method. If you've ever seen a dyno graph for any of the Mazda V6 engines, you'll see a pretty damned flat torque from about 3,000 RPM up. That's the VRIS working.

I believe the jdm mx3 picks up the extra hp due to higher compression pistons

Not higher compression, just no EGR...
Love the KL series motors (althought the stock GS motor is a K8 not a KL, they are still basicaly the same) Masterfully designed and killer performance for a early 90s engine. There are plenty of mods for the motors if you swap over to a KL series. KLs came in Ford Probes, Mazda MX-6, Millinea, or 626s. You can get fully built valve trains, better rods, any compression piston, headers (also any Kl header wil fit the K8), intake manifolds, lightweight flywheel pullies (also a Kl pulley will fit a K8) and tons of other stuff. Enjoy, thay are great cars :D

VRIS is only different length on the intake manifold.
VTEC is variable valve timings.

Ok i am not scientifically correct, but i wasnt trying to be. When i said vris is mazdas version of vtec, i meant that when the vris kicks in you can actually feel the boost just like you would in a honda when a vtec kicks in. So while they dont work the same way, the end result is the same.

So your saying the higher 10:1 compression on the k8ze doesnt give the car any extra hp? That doesnt make any sense to me...
