I took the resonator off my GS and it sounded horrible. Not sessaraly loud but whiney and raspy. I put a small glasspack in its place and it sound good.

No resonator. Keep in mind that I have the stock original exhaust system minus the resonator. Anything other than that will sound different and nullify my answer.

Its looks like i made the same common mistake as the rest of you guys.... removing the resonator when I got an exhaust put in. And you're all right, its too damn loud.

The resonator itself does not do much to reduce sound, you may have blown the guts out of your converter. The only difference I've ever heard with no resonator is a slight popping on downshift. If your muffler and converter are good you may not have got a good seal fon the pipe you used to replace the resonator. Just a thought.

Mine was removed, the sound was unbearable, I had to add a glasspack muffler as well to get it back to bearable decibles.

I just got a complete exhaust put in my car cause my old one was shot. I put a SS all the way back, hi-flow cat and a performance muffler with a resonated tip and it sounds great.

Hey custommx-3, I've never seen that. I removed the resonator for a guy with a 4 cyl mx-3 because the Ractive muffler didn't make enough sound for him. It made no difference. I removed them off 2 V-6's, one is mine, it seems to flow better but not that much louder and I've got 21/2" strait thru muffler with a 4" oval tip. Could be that mine was pretty loud to start with and the difference was negligable. In the last 3 years I've removed the resonator from probably 25 customers cars to cut expenses for their exhaust repairs. The only problem I've noted is the slight (very mild) popping sound on down shift I mentioned earlier. That is with stock exhaust which I think the original post was talking about if I'm not mistaken. :)

I was just simply stating the point of a resonator is to reduce sound.
This is from a company who makes resonators.

quote:
Softens exhaust noise and can reduce sound levels in some installations up to one dB.

My exhaust was LOUD without my resonator. That was my argument.
