Actually i took it upon myself to find a cure for this problem, I experienced the nasty/yellow headlights syndrome myself. Heres what you do. I waited until 105k to replace mine, but Mazda recommends replacing it at 90k. My car was lady driven befor I got it at 98k so its components are in relatively good shape. This is also the time to be on the lookout for CV joints, and accessory belts. You should have them checked out or do it ...

I would start with your drivetrain, get a nice clutch, etc, then go get a new engine, I would say the B6T, and have custom exhaust made for it. Personally I wouldn't use nitrous but if you really want the extra speed use it. If all you want is fast, not nimble, dont spend any money on anything other ...

Miata's are equipped with the B6ZE while the MX-3 has the B6E. Both are 1597cc but the B6ZE has DOHC while the B6E has SOHC. The DOHC explains this 20 horsepower.
