Because of the potential for corrosion inside the cable housing, you're better off getting a new one. I think there are 3 pieces to the system. If the front cable of broken the rear cables won't move when you pull the handle. To check the rear, get under the car (on jack stands) and pull on the exposed cable core with your hands to see which one is stuck or broken. You may have to pull quite hard, but don't use pliers or it may fray the cable and it may stick after or break.
With all this said, it really is better to buy new, and after market is cheaper than the dealer and usually just as good.
