It's been years since I been able to consistently work on the MX3. Back in 2009-2010 I finished swapping in the KLZE and 5-speed. I barely got to enjoy my car but college life was tough (financially and time wise). To make things worse, I couldn't pass emissions and needed to focus on college.
After finishing college in 2013, I bought a 2010 Impreza and then a 2008 Mazda 3 sedan.
MX3s with a KLZE... not that cool anymore. Unreliable and expensive.
As an Mechanical Engineer, I haven't had spare time to work on the MX3 or the enthusiasm. Lets face it, a FWD 160 ft/tq V6 engine that leaks oil isn't anything special these days.
Let's face it, engine and suspension parts are not cheap for these cars. Rebuild kits cost around $1000 (last time I checked). It's hard to recommit myself into something that may be a potential money pit.
The MX-3 is more rare then ever before. I live in Salt Lake City and I never see these cars on the road again! For this reason, I am considering getting back into the scene as my MX3 still sits in the back of my parents house.
Electric motor scene
Times have changed and I come to realize that a electric motor swap can be done very cheap and easily (when compared to rebuilding a KLZE).

Fork lift motors have been used before to drive EV converted cars.
EV conversion have been done for less than $1000. Yes, they may not be fast, but as long as the MX3 sits in the back of my parents house, it's worth trying.
I'm bouncing ideas around. Maybe a RWD, rear motor MX3? It can be done.
My goals for this swap:
Range: 50-70 miles
Top speed: 70 mph
Recharge time: 6 hours
Batteries: Lithium ion (recycled)
stay tuned...
