Wrong gasket set sent.

Post by Demonic1 »

I'm currently rebuilding my 1992 Escort GT BP05 (to go into my 92 RS MX3) , and figured a new set of gaskets was in order. So I ordered a head set of Beck/Arnley gaskets off of RockAuto a week ago (part #032-2881) along with a timing belt set. I wasn't about to go crossreferencing the part numbers to make sure they were right, Rockauto had them listed under the 1992 Protege DOHC and I figured they were good. I got the parts yesterday and it's the SOHC set.. Sent an email to their support and they said they would refund and I could keep the gaskets.
I guess my question is, what part of this gasket set is salvageable? I'm pretty sure the downpipe and ITB gasket are useable, maybe the intake/exhaust sets, the valve seals should be good too. I can't find a parts listing for the gasket set, but it's on the box at home. I'll post it tonight and get a cross-reference with their part numbers.
Any guesses on parts I'll have to source elsewhere? I'm sure the headgasket will need to be found.

You will most likely need most everything... Intake, exhaust manifolds, valve cover, valve guide seals, Head gasket as the oil and coolant pathways are probably different on the SOHC from the DOHC, but i could be wrong on that. I would make them send you the proper one rather than refunding your money.

The one I ordered was on "wholesaler closeout" and was an ungodly low price. The next set was more than double the cost. I'm going to go home and compare the gaskets to the ones that come off.
I haven't taken the head apart yet but I'm thinking this setback might just put me back on the headgasket/timing belt ONLY track. I wanted to get it running and painted before it got warm. Seattle brought summer early this year though. LOL

So, I matched the gaskets up and the SOHC and DOHC headgaskets are identical. I didn't check the depth or anything, but all the ports/passages line up. The intake and exhaust gaskets match up also. The camshaft gaskets work, but the SOHC only has one, DOHC needs 2. The valve stem seals work. Throttlebody gasket works (duh).

I would like to note that I have gotten the right gasket set now, I'm more filling this out for future info. Just in case.

I'll post pictures of the gaskets side by side soon.
