Auto tranny shaking question

Post by 2fazed »

Got a 92 323 auto. It drives fine. But when I start it and shift it to reverse, it shakes. Once I shift it into drive, it settles down. The tranny works, it goes in reverse and the other gears, just shakes roughly, mostly in reverse. I'm not familiar with auto problems. Is my tranny going out, or it may be as simple as replacing some motor mounts?

How old is the fluid, old tranny fluid can cause a few different issues.

I don't know. But I guess I could throw some new fluid in just to be safe.

Tranny shop wanted $1800 to rebuild my MPV tranny. I Googled the problem (slipping into 5th), changed the fluid and drove it for 3 more years no problems.

What the above guys said. Change your tranny fluid and preferrably filter also. Make sure you use right spec trans fluid also.

changed the fluid. took off and connected back all the motor mounts. It seems fine when not in gear. but when shifted in any gear, it shakes a little.

Maybe its not tranny related. I know we got our 05 Subaru and it would do same thing. No shaking in neutral but shaking in gear. Turned out engine was so worn out (cams were severely worn out) to where you could just shake them by hand once valve covers were off

Anybody else thinking transmission/motor mounts?

My '92 did this shortly before I lost my 1st trans. The rear mount was toast, and backing up did shake noticeably. The mount was replaced with the trans though, so I can't say which solved it, but I don't doubt it played a role.

Edit: Didn't notice Dan beat me to the punch

Did you change trans filter? If you pulled it did you find any metal, was it dirty? How did old trans fluid smell?
