Spyder Lines in New Disty Cap?

Post by Daninski »

This is a new cap but could of possibly been used a little, I'm not sure. Anyone ever seen lines like this? They wipe off with a rag and there's no cracks behind them.

The cap is made extremely cheap - cheap materials, cheap casting process, so it has a lot of internal stress, and that is those lines. They won't hurt anything though. If you're real enthusiastic, you can put a layer of dielectric grease on the inside of the cap, just not over the contacts...

I ordered it from Rockauto and it's a Standard Auto Parts cap but this one is made in Italy where as the other parts I've ordered in the past by Standard were made in Japan. I told the sales rep I wasn't interested in Italian made parts I wanted Made in Japan parts. He had no problem sending me out a new cap and only asked I take pics of this cap for their reference. So you think they're casting stress lines?

They won't be anything else. I really wouldn't sweat it.

Unless you can get a free cap out of it. Then gather a few buckets.

It's called carbon tracking. I've seen it lots. You can google it for lots of info on it.

Ya I bought a cap once that only lasted a couple of months and then big trouble. Turns out it developed a carbon track from one contact to another. I had such high hopes for standard auto parts stuff. Like I said first cap and rotor were both made in Jap land.

Ha ha, First link I clicked on for carbon tracking and look at the engine he's working on. Conincidence??? Kinda like 3x white MX3s/// Hmmm
