Turbo SOHC 1.6L

Post by ajh91 »

Can I get some input on what you think about putting a turbo on a SOHC 1.6L. The car is a 1992.
Thank you.

It's pointless.
The BP engine drops right in. And would be a bigger HP increase.
I have heard of some ITB mods that get some good HP too.

Also, I'm being really nice since this is your first post. There is a search option up top. Use it and avoid being flamed by other members. All topics have been discussed before. ITB setups, BP engine swap, turbo SOHC. search.php

the sohc is not a good starting point. It will cost a lot for all custom work.
+1 to engine swap.

Also, I BP'd my car when I blew the SOHC. The HP increase is amazing. The SOHC is like driving a lame donkey, the BP is like riding a racing stallion. comparative... not that the BP is amazing with 147 HP fresh off the line. but the SOHC was 88HP new. Plus the BP takes turbo a lot better.
It took me 7 days if you include waiting for parts and such. I've never done a swap before. The site has all the information you need.
Took me 3 days to swap BP-BP when I threw a rod.
Make sure the BP you get is in good condition.

No offence, but where did you find a 147 hp BP?

I thought 127(mazda) and 129(ford) were the numbers?

edit, the numbers are actually 125(Mazda) and 127(Ford), I believe the difference is from the intake.

My bad Ryan,

I swore somewhere I'd read 147hp. *shrugs*
All I could find was the B6-T(DOHC, before you get any ideas) with 147 HP. I also couldn't find anything pointing the Ford models having 129... I dunno.

Just put a BP into it man... You'll be happier in the long run.

I betcha a honda boy told ya that  (Pretty much all they made was SOHC)

you should try calling your local scrap yards. Check Wikipedia for the cars it came in...

Merc Tracer LTS
Escort GT 1.8
Mazda Protege 1.8 DOHC

Being the most common ones. Prefer a Mazda to a Ford, for a few little details...
