3 cylinder turbo.

Post by projectzemx3 »

has anyone ever ran a small turbo off just the front 3 cylinders???

anybody have thoughts on this? i think its a good idea especially for someone who is only looking to run 4 or 5 psi.

not only would it be easy to make yourself. you could locate your turbo up around the ac spot and you could cut your stock y pipes front bank pipe and have a piece welded in to connect from the turbo.

this might be something worth trying..

welding a cast iron manifold does not work very well. If you want low psi, get the correct spring/actuator for the wastegate and you're done.

i doubt anyone has done it, but if you are looking for something easy, just go rear mount. I know everyone on here says they are dumb, but I have talked to 4 or 5 people that have actually done them, and they say they actually run good if you get the right setup. Big exhaust wheel, small compressor, and you won't have any lag after the exhaust warms up.

I was about to ask a dumb question, but then I got it. You're running 6 cyls on the turbo from the exhaust from 3 of them, right?

ya so i talked about this idea with some people who are familiar with boosting and basically i think running a 3 cyl turbo off a v6 would burn out some valves rather quickly due to uneven back pressure.

Huh?

Then would a full 6 cyl turbo not burn out all of the valves? Its not like the valves talk to eachother and decide to burn out based on unfair treatment.

Although I could see how the pressure on 3 vavles would be greater than over 6.

If thats a bigdeal, get some nice valves...

nah it was a stupid idea anyways. if your gonna boost it then you might as well just use all 6. exhaust pressure would be off for spooling. your better off larger turbo with 6 cyls for sure.

Just use all six, its easier to use the manifulds that it came with, im not sure if anyone has used the new style piping that lets you not cut the crossmember here?

Now,i am running a hot side ar.63 and a cold side ar.48

and this turbo runs out of breath at 5k rpms

a hot side ar.48 and cold also ar.48 will defenetly choke at high end even at low psi.

as thats what was happening to me.

No its a different type of pipe that was on sale on a BB on probetalk a while back. I dont think anyone tried to fit them on the mx3. The wastegate would sit in front of the radiator where the fans go.
