trans removal

Post by 93SOHC »

I have a 93 SE ATX and am swapping to a 96 MX6 mtx and motor. I am having trouble getting the 2 lower bolts out for the bracket on the trans to the cross member. Will I be needing to use the bracket and bolts for my new set-up or can I just hack it off with a grinder? I was planning on just grinding off the bolt heads and pounding em out, but if I can hack the whole thing that'd rock. I may also try getting the weight off of them by jacking it up and see if they'll come out. Fyi I am referring to the 2 lower REAR bolts not the ones on the front lower mount, i got those buggers loose! I would like to avoid removing the cross member if I can.

If you're pulling the engine and trans together you don't have to remove the crossmember. If you can't get the nuts off the rear mount and cut them off you will need a new rear mount. If your new engine and tranny come with a mount you should be ok.

I just removed the tie bar or whatever(the whimpy crossmember thing that goes from left to right) and got at the bottom bolts. PB blaster is the best tool in my tool box! I am removing the motor and trans in one piece and I do have the mounts since I bought a whole parts car, so should be gravy. Thanks for the help, but I really just had to sit back, calm down and look at the situation to figure it out. Sometimes cars are frustrating, lol.

Yes I jack hammered the shifter linkage for like an hour, no joy. I found spraying everything a few days ahead of time with penatrant really helps. Good luck on your swap.

I'm having a few buddies over saturday to get the car turned around in my driveway so I can get a hoist in there and rip that puppy out.
