Re: How to time a disty
usually, with a timing light.
ghetto: loosen it up and twist it while car is running, pick spot where it runs best. beware though, easy to make it knock.

Re: How to time a disty
Jump TEN and grd in the diagnostics box. Using a timing light adjust your timing to 10* with your RPM at around 650. Usually your ECU will keep the timing at 10* regardless

i dont understand this, you've mentioned it before and i always was thinking about it. i am getting that if you slap in your disty in any location, it should be fine because the ecu auto adjusts it to the 10 degrees. but then whats the point of being able to time the disty? i never timed my disty with the light and it seems fine, i just placed it in there.
am i right?

Re: How to time a disty
I have a 96 and it didn't matter where I positioned my disty it stayed at 10*. Every car I've checked seems to have the disty positioned in the middle. Can anyone shed more light on timing?

Re: How to time a disty
I think it knows via cam/crank angle sensors... and I'm not sure how it tells where exactly the disty is physically sitting. knock sensor? my motor doesn't have one though. I know the motor won't run if its in upside down... but its manually "centered" and can be off quite a bit either way.
