Special insurance?

Post by nightfire »

It occurs to me that I've now dumped upwards of $10k into my mx-3 since I bought it. I know I'm certainly not alone and lots of people have put more than that.

But it gets me thinking... I've been in two not-at-fault accidents so far (there was no way for me to avoid either of them) and while they haven't caused critical damage, it's just a matter of time before someone else really gets me good.

Thing is, insurance companies are not going to give me more than $1500-2000 in the event of a write-off.

Does anyone have/know of some sort of modified / "exotic" car insurance that can cover you for not-at-fault accidents (or theft/disasters) beyond the assessed value of a car? Something where I could say "I want $10k in coverage" and pay.. whatever.. $150/mo (as opposed to my $26/mo right now)?

Oh I know i'm not complaining about it. :)

What I'd like is to pay more like $100/mo, and know I'm covered replacement cost in the case of a not-at-fault accident.

Yes get your car appraised, they document all your mods, the Insurance company sees that and jacks your rates through the roof. Defensive driving is probably your best bet. When I drive I anticiapate that all the other drivers are as*holes. I slow down going through an intersection if someone is turning left in case some moron turns right, stuff like that. No accident claims in 25years. I'm not a slow driver either I just take it easy in traffic, then I make up for it where there's more room.

Dani.... wrong again! ahah sorry
I have special modded insurance with Dominion and I am paying $200 a month for my 2 cars the MX3 and 323 all yr on my own, and full coverage. I had an apraisal done on the MX3 last yr so they are using that as the "write off" cost that I get if I get into an accident... They took pics of it up and down and have it all listed. But get this.... When I was with State farm (the worst for modded cars) I was paying the exact same $200 a month and only getting liability and being scared to drive my car since they would screw me if I got into an accident (They did this to me b4, legally they can void you on the spot and leave you with everything). So now I am perfectly safe with the proper insurance company and I am getting more coverage for the same price!
You just gotta look around! :love2:

You are just looked at as a liability... But if you look at the facts and numbers the ppl who are getting cought speeding are in moms van and car not modded at all!

They have ways in Ontario to screw you real good... Like if a cop pulls you over in a modded car they can give you the inspection on the spot no problem BUT do not pop your hood unless they have a warrant!.... but when they find nothing wrong with the car, they will then call your insurance agent on the spot and tell them all the stuff and then your agent drops you and your car gets impounded for having no Insurance! Sneaky Eh!

I should be a lawyer! :freak:

I do drive very defensively and cautiously. I've always got my thumb over the horn, I minimize deltas between cars and stagger, especially when I'm not sure what they're planning to do. I always check the intersection when entering after a red light, always assume someone is about to turn out in front of me when blocked by another vehicle making a left turn, etc.

Maybe I was just unlucky.. first time someone passed me (quickly) on the highway in the rain, lost control, and slammed into me. It happened so fast there was nothing I could do; I was on the brakes for maybe half a second, but he was spinning, hit the barrier and stopped too quickly. It was two lanes between two barriers.

The second time, I was driving on a 3-lane road (2 lanes north, 1 south). I was in the center lane doing maybe 50 (speed limit) and someone else appeared to pull off to the shoulder, braking relatively hard. Maybe 100' between us. I suppose it didn't really register at this point. Maybe that was my mistake. I lifted, kept an eye on him, then right as I passed him he decided to pull a U-turn in front of me. I was utterly shocked and couldn't believe he didn't check either of his mirrors or blind spot.

I managed to slow down to maybe 30 before we collided. What should I have done differently? He appeared to be aware of me and waiting for me to pass, then suddenly BAM. :(

It's sad. I don't understand why these people get off on harassing young & innovative car enthusiasts.

It's as if they just want to drill into them that authoritarian spirit.

I suspect per capita the most dangerous groups are:

The elderly
New drivers (< 2 years experience)
Soccer moms

Serious car modifications are made by people who love cars, and love driving. They're made by people in their 20s and 30s who have some amount of money, responsibility, and certainly driving experience.

Yeah there are some jerks out there. That's true in any sphere.

But this profiling is not fair. Some angst-ridden soccer mom driving her caravan, late, on the way to pick up her 3 kids is probably far more inattentive and likely to cause a serious collision than someone driving their ZE'd MX-3 they've put 200 hours of work into (even if they are going faster than the posted limit). Let's face it - a well modified MX-3, like any high performance vehicle, is far safer at a given speed than a minivan.

Meh.

Sorry I thought we were talking about REAL modding like turboing your engine for HP increases or ZEing it. Ricing it out or adding some Canadian tire add ons isn't modding in my books. Anyway State Farm has always been pricey so I'm guessing you would of got a discount regardless by changing companies. You should be shopping for better rates every year. If your trying to say that apraising a car gets you cheaper insurance I think you would make a good lawyer. I've never met a lawyer who wasn't full of it.

ahah NO you still didn't get me, it's the Internet it's impossible to get me on here! People take forums WAY to seriously sometimes! :love2:
I wouldnt call my car riced out at all! It's done tastefully for show purpose (which is what I made it for) and not 1 part was purchased from crappy tire... you know why?? ALL there stuff is for OFF ROAD USE ONLY which would make my car illegal for the road!! eheheh. But Dominion once again... said it's all fine what you do as long as it's in the apraisal! As for Zeing it... you can't show me 1 insurance agent that can tell the difference from a 1.8 to a 2.5!

It's not the insurance agent you have to worry about but the appraiser. They're a pretty crafty lot. Anyway, we better give this thread back to Nitefire, we've highjacked it enough.

Bah. I still get the impression what I'm seeking doesn't exist. Could be a business opportunity, actually. :) I would suspect that serious car modders are a fairly low risk group relative to average.

There is places out there but don't forget your in Quebec so it's all different. I know Ontario does have exotic and custom insurance... but you usually have to be with a full G licence for 10-15 yrs and the car must be 25 yrs or older... some are 15 yrs.
