Left Inner CV Joint Will Not Come Out

Post by jvaughn »

 I need some help! I have a '93 GS, auto that the left inner CV joint will not come out. I've tried the turn and pry, turn and pry method over and over with no luck. I took it to a local shop, and they tried for 2-3 hours and they had no luck. They said they would have to remove the transmission, attempt to split the case, and try to remove the joint from the inside. They seem to think it is welded to the spider gear or something is jamming it.

So, in order to save a few pennies, I've taken the liberty of dropping the transmission; is it currently sitting in my basement. I am able to look through the right side axle opening and see that the left CV joint is in fact moving (about an 1/8" or so), which leads me to believe that is it NOT welded internally.

So, my questions are:
Is it necessary, or beneficial, to to split the case to see what is going on? And if so, how would I go about this task? Would I need to drop the pan and valve body, and basically do a rebuild, or just remove the bolts at the seem? I've never disassembled a transmission before, and I really do not want to mess anything up.

And before the comments come in about a manual swap, I don't want to do that. I would like ot fix this as cheaply and as quickly as possible. :crying:
