ball bearing into bracket, can I do it?

Post by npspears »

Alright guys here is the situation. I need to get a ball bearing pressed into s bracket, the bracket that bolts onto the engine. The ball bearing is out and the bracket is off the axle. I just talked to Mazda and they said it would be about $40 to get the bearing in. My question is, can I do it myself? Can I press the bearing into the bracket myself? If you want to see some pics I can get those loaded.

Pat from moca helped me replaced mine.

It's doable, just make sure you have a breaker bar handy.

I know you believe that you understand what you think I said but I'm sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

so I did it today. Pretty easy as long as the half shaft is separated from the drive shaft. Pretty straight forward. I used a mallet and hit a hammer against the mallet so not to damage the ball bearing. It slides in with not too much force. The harder part is getting the half shaft in the ball bearing. Just found a step and used a hammer to get the shaft in the bearing. Not too bad. Saved so money by not taking it to a mechanic. Glad I did it myself. Some time you learn stuff the hard way. Shouldn't have messed up the ball bearing to begin with. Oh well.

You always have to make sure you only press on the outer sleeve. Pressing on the inner can damage the bearings and that's not good. Funny, those bearings don't go very often.
