removing a 93 instrument cluster

Post by chestertyson »

I'm in the process of installing my after market gauges. I was able to install them before on my 95 mx3 but this 1993 I have now is giving me some problems. When I was trying to pull the whole cluster out, there seem to be I'm assuming, the wire or cable for the spedometer attached to the center behind the cluster preventing me from extracting the whole unit out so i can proceed with my work. It feels pretty solid when I was tugging at it and so I stopped fearing that I end up breaking something. I just need to know how to release the cluster off my car, any thing that I should be unlocking that I haven't found yet so I can continue with my replacement?

The 92-93 RS models have mechanical speedo - there is a metal cable that goes from the speedo gear in the tranny to the speedometer. The cable usually is not long enough to get any good slack.
If you can put your hand behind the cluster (if there is any space or if you have small hands) - you can try and unhook the cable from the cluster.
Otherwise you can loosen (remove) the speedo gear from the tranny and that will give you enough slack to pull the cluster out and unhook the cable comfortably.

The easiest way to do it, is unhook the cable from the engine bay. You don't have to unhook it from the tranny. It unscrews on the cable itself. You'll see it between the battery and intake elbow.

I have a 93, and when I did my cluster gauge upgrde to Euros', I pulled the cable out from behind the cluster. As stated a couple post above, you have to pretty much get a good grip on it. Then after you have the grip on the cable behind the cluster.... it should pull straight out.
If you fall, then get back up........Luck favors the prepared

I've done this a few times... I would advise doing it from under the dash. Just mash your hand up between all the wiring. You'll know when you found the right cable, its thicker, and if you wiggle it the cluster moves too... I forget what kind of clip it is, but I think its a pinch. Its not difficult to figure out.

I usually lay my seat all the way back and sit on it upside down :D
