I have an oil leak that loses about 1/3 of a quart within a week and then stops leaking. The PCV valve seems to rattle ok, could it still be the culprit?
I'm am a newbie with car mechanics, but am kind of assuming that the leak must be high up somewhere where not all that much oil reaches, like the PCV?

do you see any oil at all externally. if you do, you can degrease and then observe closely for a source. is the car smoking at all like piston rings.
externally, especially on the passenger side beneath the timing belt cover you need to consider the crank and cam seals. if coming from the valve cover, think about the valve cover seals. if seen in the spark plug reservoirs then think about the tower seals for the plugs.
