Considering

Post by anaxagoras1986 »

Hello. This is my first post on the forum and I was hoping that you guys (and gals) might be able to give me some more info on the MX-3! :)

I always thought the MX looked pretty cool, much better than the MX-6/Probe but I never really got into either one... I have been reading a lot about these cars, and the GSR swaps. I saw someone even turned theirs into an AWD machine!

Handling is an extremely important aspect of any car I get (look at my current vehicles!). By the sounds of it, the MX3 handles quite well, especially for a FWD car. Are their easy ways to make it even better?

What about the brakes? I have gotten acostomed to my gut wrenching 11.8 inchers w/4ch ABS on the SVT. The 944 has pretty good brakes too. I am assuming that being a small light weight little car, the MX3 should brake very well no?

If I were to get one of these, I am still quite torn between the 4cyl, and 6cyl car. While the 2.5L swap sounds pretty sweet, I think I might like having the lightweight 4cyl engine for perhaps crisper handling? Or is the V6 low centered enough where it is about the same as the tall I4? I'd LOVE to do a nice BP swap on one of these... My brother has had quite a few EGTs with BP engines in them and I was extremely impressed by how smooth, tough, and effecient those little engines are. He currently has a Capri non-turbo and the B6 really failes to impress me with short legs, weak bottom-end (duh 1.6L NA), and a top end that is quite uneventful... The BP also got better millage than the B6, despite being in a heavier, less aerodynamic car... Sadly, even the BPs only have what 127HP? That's really not that much, even in a light weight MX3. If I were to goto the trouble of doing an engine swap and everything I'd atleast like to be putting 150 to the ground. How well do the BPs respond to bolt-on modifications? I'd like to stay away from boost and keep things simple... is it easy to push the BP upto around 170HP at the flywheel?

Thanks for any info/suggestions on this guys.

Welcome to the board. MX-3 does handle well for a FWD car. Adding front and rear upper strut bars is the easiest and cheapest mod for a great handling improvement. Further improve handling by installing sport lowering springs like H&R, Eibach etc along with better handling struts like Tokico blues, or better yet, Koni Red cartridges. Ford ZX-2 struts will also work well - requires minor mod to install. The H&R and Eibach springs will lower your ride ~1" for a lower center of grav, stiffer ride, but not too harsh for the street and not dropped so low that other drivetrain and suspension components take undue beating (like CV shafts) The GS steering rack has a better gear ratio for steering responsiveness than the 4 cyl model.
