high pitch noise from Rockford amp?

Post by chertel »

I have a rockford amp and when I start the car there is a annoying high pitch squeal from the amp then it goes away after a few minutes? I checked all the grounds and everything is good. I thought maybe it was because of the cold weather but last winter it worked great.
any help, ideas
thanx

Have you changed your ground between last winter and now? Sounds like maybe a ground loop problem. DO NOT ground your amp back to the battery. Use the same gauge wire that's powering the amp to run the shortest ground lead possible to a solid frame connection point.

It is the P600Ibd rockford punch mono. It's all chrome and lights up a red rockford logo if you have seen that style before? I dont think it has a fan? I will try a shorter ground wire if I can relocate the amp because it is mounted on top of the sub box now so a longer ground wire is needed. Thanx for the help. It is freezing here in edmonton now so I have to wait for it to warm up before I play with it.
Another question, other than the anoying sound will it hurt anything else if I still use it before fixing it? Because the sound goes away after the car warms up.

Try running your rca wires down the opposite side of the the car that the power wire is on. If that doesn't work i suggest using a higher quality rca cable.

I'll check the connection to the cd player, the connection to the amp is good. They are rockford rca wires but dont look like the greatest quality. I had a set of phoenix gold rca wires on my last car that were of much better quality. I think I'll just upgrade the rca's. Thanx. I think thats the problem, yesterday as I pumped the brakes the sound went +- with the pumping of the break and now that the weather has warmed up a little the sound is not as bad and goes away after a short while. Probably poorly insulated rca's.
thanx

Easy fixes...

-Move the wires to the opposite side of the car
-RCA ground loop isolator
If nothing else
-Higher quality shielded RCA Leads
