No fabric on my rear panels???

Post by matrice »

I just purchased a 96 mazda from montreal and was cleaning it the other day and noticed the rear panels are plastic, same texture as the rest of the panel, i thought they usually have the fabric over them, or is it just a 96 thing?? let me know what you guys think. thanks

That was a cost cutting measure by Mazda. They had removed the fabric, it was mostly late '95 and all '96 models. I believe it was Tekguy's car that I first noticed it. Most of the old skool MXers and mazdamx-3owners group will know who I am refering to.

After one meet, we noticed that the sound of closing the door was different from '92, '94 and 96 model. The newer the model the more hollow the sound was.

I like it, alot. I noticed my rear fabric is bubbling up. I would love to have those panels in the color I need. Not bad at all.

Sorry to bring up an old topic but I had to share. You can remove the fabric from any year MX-3 and it looks like that. :D
Here's a album of old pics, there's some before and after pics of the rear quarter panels:

The door panels are also completly wrapped in black vinyl under the fabric. But good luck removing that without destroying it.
All you have to do is rip the fabric off the rears and use some 3M adhisive remover (purchase at WalMart) on the glue that's left. After you remove all the glue use some good leather conditioner on the panel and let it sit for a bit. Try to find some with Lanolin. It helps put moisture back in the plastic so it doesn't get brittle. And Tada! Easiest mod ever!

Yours should have them. My '92 RS (tan int), '92 GS and '94 GS all have the same rear panels.

Thanks for the Tip Kenzie :2thumbsup: That will make it much easier to make my rear panels match the leather rear seat I bought for my 92 GS :)

care to share how you ripped that fabric off and kept it all pretty underneath? I'd like to do that with my cars. (well, one car)
