I have a weird question

Last night I was driving down my road and my car started acting up. It felt like it was going to stall out. Then steam came pouring outta the hood. The temp. never changed, never went up, then We noticed that the hose that connects the egr valve had a hole in it. so we replaced it and added more antifreeze cause most of it leaked out. now when I let it Idle for about 5 mins smoke comes out from under the thermostat but the temp. never changes and the car runs fine does anyone know what the heck is wrong with my baby?

If the coolant leaked out then there's a leak in the cooling system somewhere - in my case it was the radiator hose. If it's a slow leak then the temparature may not change much until its too late -and if its really cold outside and the car is moving - that could cool the engine a bit too. But if the coolant drips on the hot engine - it will smoke.

I was driving mine one day ... I thought that I saw something coming out from under the hood ... temperature gauge was fine ......... so when I got home I checked and at the end of the rad hose there was steam and water coming out ... not fast ............ that's why I think the temp gauge stayed the same ......... so I replaced the hose and also replaced the rad cap ........ she's perfect now

You can rent or buy a Cooling system pressure tester kit.. (if you lived in WA State you could borrow mine even). This kit will allow you to pressurize your cooling system while the engine isnt running.. this allows you to find leaks and fix them when the engine is cool rather than running the risk of overheating. Or you could take it to a radiator shop and they can test it for you. As for the smoke (steam most likely) coming out from around the thermostat housing.. might just be a pool of coolant there that is evaporating off once the engine heats up. Or you might have a leak around the housing. Hope this helps. Btw.. might be a good idea to replace the rad cap as Deb suggested and I will even go one further and recommend replacing the thermostat as well. Could be that your thermostat seized up or stuck half open/ closed. If you dont know when last it was changed out.. couldnt hurt to swap in a new one. Best of luck.

thanks the car is running fine now i just think it was because there was excess coolant in places there shouldnt have been coolant
