1993 MX3 TB Gear marks....trying to set timeing

Post by Maztuner »

Hey guys,

I am working on a friend 93 MX3. He blew the head gasket and we replaced it. My question is the timeing. On the upper TB gear on at the cam there are two lines, one has YU below it and the other has 256 or something below it. My question is which one of these should be pointed up. I have the #1 Piston TDC and have no clue on the TB gear markings.

I'm a RX-7 tuner by trade, damn piston engines got too many bloody parts....

I have searched all over the site and have yet to find any info on setting the time. As stated before there are two lines on the Cam gear and a YU and a 282. Not sure where to set these marks. I am out here working on it now, so if anyone has a reply, could really use the help.

The gear should also have two marks on it and they will both line up to make sure that you have the motor on the right compression stroke. The rear "cam" gear only has one marking though.
ps, it is not a TB gear, they aren't attached to the TB... I'm sure it was just a typo.

Throttle Body vs I'm guessing you meant Timing Belt

The easy thing to remember is that the marks of the SOHC cam pulley point to 12 and 3 O'clock at the same time unless you have a SOHC with a OEM adjustable Cam pulley which there is only one mark which points to 12 O'clock.
