Too many choices

Post by Nd4SpdSe »

I'm trying to figure out the suspension setup I want, but without actually driving on them, it's almost impossible. What i basically wanted is:

-Sport-like suspension to be able to be competitive in automotive events (i wanted to start AutoX this year, but i work weekends with my new job :() but still keep the car streetable, and the Mx-3 will not see winter's anymore.
-About a ~1.5" drop

This is what has crossed my mind:

-GC coils with MazdaSpeed struts : Very customizable, but seems like the struts will be underdampened. Also will have to be ordered from the states (exchange is nice, but bend over for brokerage). Nylon shims recommended. Pricey for a first setup

-AST Sport-Line : Full true coil-over kit (that i understand it is), but limited experience with setup; 1 good comment, 1 bad comment. Shipping from overseas. Pricey for a first setup.

-GC Coils with ZX2 Struts: Sound like the almost ideal setup. Gro tested :2thumbsup: but 1.5" on the rear is too low?

-Eibach Pro with ZX2 Stuts: Somewhat common setup with alot of good comments.

I'm banging my head on trying to figure this stuff out, doesn't help that I'm not too knowledgable on this stuff, but i read that i can. But I need to get it all ordered, shipped and installed for May 21st. It's still a good amout of time, but I don't wanna sit around with my thumb up my but until it's too late.

Personally, i would like to start with a basic setup and change/customise it accordingly, but i never have any luck selling anything, so i would perfer to get something and stick with it.

I will be putting some serious hard driven track time this year on ZX2's with an Eibach Pro Kit. Also have bushings and all that good stuff. I'll be able to tell if it'll work well enough by june i think.

I just have the bushings in. I'm putting in the rest tomorrow I hope. If it's not too cold.

Lowered 1.5sh, I found my set-up quite pleasing. Coupled with the tower braces, it's pretty darn solid yet still very streetable (read stiffer but comfortable enough for country and city driving). I've yet to replace bushings.

-GC Coils with ZX2 Struts: Sound like the almost ideal setup. Gro tested but 1.5" on the rear is too low?
GC coils have an adjustable height, that is why they are "coil overs" they have a threaded coil and a ring nut that can be moved up and down on the threaded coil then tightened down to hold the selected height. The spring sits on the ring nut. Meaning that if you get GCs you set the height at whatever you want. Within their range of course, I'm not sure exaclty what it is, but I know it can be higher than stock to almost sitting on the ground.

Any specifics on why you recommend that combo?

Mike; like we talked earlier, similar to my set-up, KYB (GR2s) and B&G springs.
