Lousy MPG W/ 1600cc 93 mx-3, help and what's your mpg
I just bought a 93 MX-3 with a 1600cc engine W/auto Trans(55000 miles and it's a cherry). But it only gets 22 miles to the gallon. My Mazda Miata gets 33 mpg. Doesn't seem at all right. I have replaced all the obvious things, plugs, rotor, rotor cap.wires, fuel and air filter, checked timing, exhaust was replaced from catalytic converter back with standard diameter pipe and custom muffler.
any ideas out there? and what kind of mpg does everyone else get with this model?
Tony
[ September 11, 2003: Message edited by: agomonaco ]
[ September 11, 2003: Message edited by: agomonaco ]
[ September 11, 2003: Message edited by: agomonaco ]
[ September 11, 2003: Message edited by: agomonaco ]

Mazda automatics traditionally suck for MPG. They give new meaning to the term - slushbox. But you didn't mention changing the first thing I would look at for better MPG - the oxygen sensor.

O2 sensor...Yaa. good point. I did replace that too, unfortunately didn't change anything either..emissions are good, 50 HC at idle, 24hc @2500rpm: CO at idle and 2500rpm below 4.
Tony

Mazda automatics definitely suck on many levels, but you should be getting better mileage than this. I typically get between 28-34 mpg, depending how much city driving I do on that tankfull. Provided the basics are covered (air filter, clean oil, ign. timing within specs or slightly advanced, o2 sensor is good, etc) I would pinpoint driving style. If you are blasting up to 4-5000 rpm in first and second gear at every stop sign and red light, that will definitely take a toll on the gas mileage. Another thing to consider is a fuel leak or bad fuel cap, but you should be smelling it if these were letting that much gas out. Another possibility is an inaccurate speedo/odo. I just had my emission test, I will check it when I get back home and see whay my HC's were. I dont remember exactly what they were, but yours seem high (I could be wrong), I'll compare when I get home.

Thanks for the advice...but i think the next thing I'll check is the MAF and the temp sensor on the injection system.
put in a bosch O2 sensor...was told that was ok..hope i find the problem and get ur mileage.
Tony
[ September 13, 2003: Message edited by: agomonaco ]
