timing belt tensioner

Post by pbr »

Engine started running rough, pulled over and it stalled. Cranked up and it sounded horrible knocking badly, had it towed to dealer, he cranked it up and ran it in shop to decide what was wrong. Said timing belt tensioner was bad. Had new belt, tensioner, idler pulleys, waterpump, crank and cam shaft seals put in same time. Engine runs fine, did this possibly hurt the engine in any way when it happend and was it bad to run the motor to diagnose? Any piston or cam damage possible?

Also forgot to mention that they said the tensioner bolts were stripped so they drilled and tapped to a bigger bolt, has anyone heard of this, the bolt they went to looked like a 3/8

I'm there with you buddy. I took the car into the shop two weeks ago for a belt that was starting to squeel a little. They ordered a replacement "bracket". One week later, I hear a clunk and my "idler pully" falls off and the battery discharges. $300 later and we're back to normal...almost forgot to mention...the only thing that was left was a washer where a nut and bolt probably used to be. Probably stripped and fell off after they installed this bracket that was supposed to tighten things up.
I'll be taking my new bill to them with questions...
[ June 30, 2003: Message edited by: marksoden ]
