my klze won't start

Post by mmac »

I had my klze fitted and my car has been running like a dream for last couple of months ,but.....
My car started as normal and was idling/running ok, then I backed out onto the road went to pull away and it stalled. Tried to restart it and the engine turned over fast enough but no signs of life. Called out the Auto Association to see if they could solve the mystery. They couldn't find anything wrong(air, fuel, spark plugs, fuses, relays ok) and as a last resort I tried a spare ECU I had. The car burst into life. Great I thought problem solved my ECU must have given up. Only prob is that my spare ECU is US spec(I'm in UK) and although the car runs, emissions are illegally high and fuel consumption is scary. So I bought a replacement ecu from a salvage yard tried it and .... the car still wouldn't start.
The only thing that seems strange is that when I turn the ignition on with the US ECU my rad fan does not come on initially(as should be the case when car is 'cold'),but when I fit either of my UK ECU and turn on ignition the rad fan starts immediately and keeps running.
This problem started 8 days ago and any help would be appreciated

I'm not familiar with UK emissions specs. What could you guys possibly have that we don't have already?

I have no idea why, but if I run the US ECU emissions 30 TIMES legal limit and car only does 15 mpg. On the Uk ECU emissions OK and 30 mpg. THe US ecu is p/n K801 18 881, The UK ecu is p/n K819 18 881B. There is a big difference inside the ECU's, the pcb board layout on the UK ecu looks like the one on Mike's 2GPGT page(http:// home.golden.net/~trinity/)
I have tried resetting both the UK ecu's by removing -ve battery connector and pressing brake pedal for 30 secs.Tried starting in diagnostic mode (with TEN & GND connected in DIAG box).Tried different fuelling chips in each ECU. I have changed the temp sensor for rad fan( to try and stop the fan running as soon as ignition is on) but it made no difference.
i have read through alot of the trouble shooting in the online manual and checked everything I can and I am still no further on.
Does any body know of any thing that might trigger rad fan to run as soon as ignition is on and could prevent the car from restarting like a sort of overheat trip or cut-out.

Not that I think that I can solve your problem, but I'm wondering where the engine is from? U.S. U.K. Japan?

If the ECUs are that different you probably have one OBDI (the one one with two circuit boards) and other OBDII (newer, only one board)
The newer has different water temp sensor config (actually only one senser instead of two) which also explains the radiator fan behaviour.
Which ECU is the original car setup?

The engine is J-spec KLZE from corksport.
My UK ECU is the car's original ecu but rechipped(the car ran happily on this for last few months). I now also have another UK ECU(same p/n) with standard 1.8 fuelling chip(I bought it cause I thought my own had given up).Neither of these ECU starts car but both cause the rad fan to run all time.
When i compare US and UK ECU's the bottom board looks similar but the upper boards look completely different,(the most noticeable difference is the UK upper PCB is only about 2/3 size of US PCB)
I gonna try and rig up LED to see if any malfunction codes are being produced by ECU.
