"
I have the 4 cyl sohc 1992...
I hate how slow it is, and how the motor seems bogged down.
I don't know much about this crap but I want some more power
I feel like something is bogging the motor down
I'm thinking restrictive exhaust...
What do yall think?
Please answer these questions:
1. Is an intake hard to install? Can I do it myself pretty easily?
2. How much does a high flow exhaust cost? What do you get with it, Just a high flow cat, bigger pipes, or what?
3. IS BYPASSING/REMOVING THE CATYLITIC CONVERTOR GOOD FOR FUEL EFFICIENCY?
(I am NOT asking if it's legal.)
4. IS BYPASSING/REMOVING THE CATYLITIC CONVERTOR GOOD FOR THE MOTOR?
(I am NOT asking if it's legal.)
5. IS BYPASSING/REMOVING THE CATYLITIC CONVERTOR GOOD FOR THE CAR IN GENERAL?
(I am NOT asking if it's legal.)
6. What else can I do CHEAP? I DON'T want to put the motor under more stress. Am I right about the exhaust and the intake? PLZ EXPLAIN THIS s--- TO ME. My idea is to make it more powerful, thus it won't work as hard. Plus I'm tired of sad acceleration!"
1. yes very easy, at the most 30min to install.
2.you could go get a custom made cat back at a muffler shop for prolly 300-350. just the pipes and the muffler
3.yes it is
4.anything that lets its breath a lil better, but u wanna keep sum exhaust velocity
5. umm i would say that it is a lil better by letting it breath a lil bit, but i dun think it would have a HUGe effecty on your car.
6. yea you got the right idea. you could get sum water wetter for your coolant, and you could lossen you belt tensioners a lil bit so its not werkin so hard to power those. weight reduction is another one. hope this helped you out, later dayz

If anything just advance the timing a lil and run at least 89 octane.

quote:
Originally posted by oo7sniper:
4.)Bypassing or removing the CAT is NOT good for the motor!!!!! Eventualy you will blow the motor! On a 4cyl naturaly aspirated motor (means no turbo, super charger, or NOS) it needs a little back pressure to operate with out causing problems. If it was turbo you don't have to have a CAT because the exhaust pushing on the turbine in the turbo creates the back pressure you need. You need to replace the CAT w/ a High Flow CAT & use my recommendations above for your stock motor which I had the 93 MX-3 RS 1.6 SOHC done like that!
-Denso Iridium Plugs
-Magnecore 8.5mm KV85 Competition Plug Wires
-Red Line Synthetic Motor Oil
-Red Line MT-90 Tranny Fluid
-Red Line Watter Wetter
-MAF meter from a 87-88 RX-7 Turbo
-Larger K&N Oil filter
-Exhaust wrap for Headers & downfall pipe
-Run Premium Gas
-Gum Out Air Intake/Throttle Body cleaner every 12,000 miles will make a BIG differance
-Fuel injector cleaner at least once a month
-Remove ALL unnesicary weight from car (seats, carpet, panels, stereo, ect... if you can live with out).
-Advance your timing
-Fuel Pressure Regulator (run on the lean side of stoich to gain a few HP)
Those are all the cheapies I can think of as of the moment. To get big gains off the stock motor do the following:
-PRM Jet Stream Cold Air Intake www.corksport.com $179 Around 10-15HP
-Mazdaspeed Motor Mounts (40% stiffer) $129 www.corksport.com About 10HP
-Unorthodox Racing Under Drive Pulley $179 www.corksport.com About 10HP
-Totol kit from Gude "Bull Frog" wich is port & polish head, large bore throttle body, cams, ect... www.gude.com around $1500 around 30-50HP
-50-80HP shot of NOS $599
-Reprogram ECU or use a stand alone 10-20HP
-Hurricane Headers $240 www.corksport.com Around 10-20HP w/ High Flow exhaust system
-ACT street performance clutch www.corksport.com $260-$280 I think
-MSD Ignition System & Blaster 2 Coil Around 5-15HP depending on mods
If you did ALL of these mods including NOS & had it dyno tuned you MIGHT be able to get around 240HP-315HP at the flywheel IF your lucky! That is why I did the B6T swap in mine & others have done the B6T or BPT swap. If you do the swap it is a LOT cheaper and has a LOT more potential. My B6T will be around 400HP when finished. If your gonna keep the stock motor then do the cheap mods and add a shoot some NOS. Currently my B6T is around 180HP w/ 190lbs/ft torque run 13-14sec quarter mile @ 90-95mph on a pretty much stock B6T (Head, Block, Turbo, & B.L.O.V).
-----------------------
Jeremy Miller
93 Mazda MX-3 RS-R :D

No...this is wrong, at least most of it.
a) removing your cat will NOT make your engine blow. that is ridiculous.
b) where did you find ANY of those power gains? those are all way out of the question. Motor mounts dont add any power, let alone 10 hp. ABSURD!
If you totally prepped a B6 NA style, but kept it near streetable, youre looking at maybe 190 horsepower at the wheels. And that is not gonna be a fun car to drive around town, due to the total lack of power under 5K.
When Fred and the other guy built their old proteges back in the early 90's with help from Rod Millen, they both got about 200whp from the BP motors. If you want to do that with the B6, youre looking at some of Toda's higher end cams, which means youre gonna be upgrading valvetrain. You might also want to look to some higher compression pistons, but it totally depends on what youre gonna use to control it on how high you want to go.
Please dont post that motor mounts are gonna give you 10hp, thats RETARDED. And if you think you can get 15 hp from the PRM with an otherwise stock motor, never post in the performance section again unless its a question. Sorry to be pissy, but dont come in here and start posting stuff like you actually know something if you dont have a clue. I dont care what you car you have or anything....thats absurb!

i would "think" with it stiffening the mounts, it doesn't let the motor "rock" as much when under hard acceleration. which reduces the amount of work the motor needs to put power to the ground. it slightly improves the wheel hop and you might experience a small increase in tq. but this is just a thought...so none of that "if ya don't know what your talking about...don't talk" :D
Fast imports only come on two wheels.

Like in my cadillac, It's not a power demon, but all I do is press the gas a LITTLE and it gets right up to speed and you'll never notice it shifting it's so smoothe...
This mx-3 struggles off the line... In normal day to day driving, I get pissed off cause I always feel like I'm working the car to death just to get a normal rate of acceleration.
And for lord sakes, can't I make this car PEEL OUT?
I mean damn, I'm sorry but fools are wrong about "you can't peel out with front wheel drive"
Get in a 90 or 91 cadillac and find out
My 91 eldo with 127000 on her will burn the tires smoothe the f--- off
I've owned probably 10 of 89-91 caddies and they all make the wheels scream like a b---- on a sybian
Hell I remember my 91 seville would always scream the tires ACCIDENTALLY
I miss that car
They're only 200hp and they weigh 3100 but a shitload of torque
I bet when yall hop these mx3s up, I bet you can smoke the tires down to wires.... I want that! I love to sit at red lights and scream the tires a bit for fun. This mx-3, the way it is, would just drive right out into the intersection
All I want is a little PEELING and some SMOOTHE acceleration

I want it to be smoothe like my caddy.. Just step down on the pedal and it purrs
I don't want to feel it shift or hear the motor rev up to 4000rpm and scream at me just cause I wanna get moving at a decent rate
Plus, this car always runs 3300rpm at 75mph! What in the HELL causes that?
I've never seen a car have to run 3300rpm constantly to maintain 75mph

I'm beginning to think my motor is just fucked

Every mechanic in the world says the motor sounds like a brand new one when they listen with their stethescope s---

I'm confused
And captain morgan aint helpin

*sigh*

a) please be sober when you post
b) a MX-3 is NOT a Cadillac....its doesnt have torque, not will it smoke the tires as well as a car WITH torque.
c) 3300 at 75 is less than mine. 4 cylinders are meant to be run at higher rpm. There is reason they redline over 6.
d) if you want it to drive like a Caddie, drive your caddie, and sell the MX-3

the engine is safe at redline, it will just drink fuel there.
