if i do this will i permantly use more gas?

No not a performance mod, just an idle fix, and you will not use any more gas in fact if you are dealing with a high idle you may use less. this just tells the ecu to remember that this is where the idle needs to be.

I just went out and tried this but it seems to go back to normal after I shut the car off. Should I shut the car off then remove the jumper wire in the diagnostic box? I let the car warm up, put the jumper wire in the diagnostic box from the "ten" to the "gr", adjusted the idle to normal, then removed the jumper (while the car was still running). It seemed to work fine until I shut off the car and restart it. It then idles high again and when I let it sit there for a min it still doesn't seem to go down. On the other hand it does go down to normal (where I set it) from time to time, but it seems to jump back up as soon as I do anything with the car (open the door, turn on headlights, hit brakes, etc...). I was wondering why this is. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

If you go the link that was posted, there is a post there on how to clean your IAC. That could be your problem.
