I heard they are illegal because when they are tightened properly you cannot perform a shoulder check. And if you can they arnt on tight enough to help you in a accident.
My buddy has some Sparco harnesses in his civic and he wears them and the seatbelt most of the time aha.

Depends on the region I guess....so here's the skinny for Ontario.
Any harness other than your OEM seatbelt is NOT legal for street use. Even if they are "safer", they are for track use only. I guess they feel it would impede rescue personel from quickly pulling you from a burning wreck if you're unconscious or whatever. But for the most part they restrict movement so that you can't lean forward or as Tyler said check blind spots effectively...and if they're too lose you risk dislocating both shoulders and face-planting your steering wheel.
[ September 20, 2003: Message edited by: Darren Hyderman ]

yea darrens right it is one of those local ordinace things so it varies from city to city or state to state, they are semi legal where i live, but you have to take them to the dot office and have them checked out, but on the upside, if they give you a hassle about them, see if the cop is DOT if he is just a regular police officer he isnt lawfully alowed to write you a ticket, thats the same for if you have a jspec engines or any mods that arnt street legal, only a DOT officer can fine you

ah crap that sucks i kinda figured as much though, guess i'll have to hook up my stock ones along with teh harness :(

but a cop cant pull you over just for not wearing a selt belt he has to pull you over for something else as well right ? thats what i gathered from reading some reading i have just done.

a cop will pull you over for not wearing a seatbelt and write you a ticket while he's at it.

They can pull you over for not wearing a seat belt. Its happened to many people around here. If cops want to catch you, they will. Sometimes they have road blocks to check if anyone is DWI and seatbelts and registration and all that good stuff. Cops, you have to love them :D
