Re: is the bpt swap really worth it?
Hi everyone, My friend I have the answere for you. I don't know what 1/4 mile times your looking for with a turboed mx-3 but if you want to be in the 13 14 seconds range I have the inexpensive almost bolt on solution for you. I have a 92 black mx-3 that ran a 13.27 last time at the track. The turbo motor that I am using is actually a B6-T. The reason I chose to go with this engine is because performance parts and everyday oem parts are very easy to source on this motor. I started by finding a 91-94 mercury capri xr2. I found one in a complete car for $500.00 bucks. and they are easy to find. This gave me the engine/trans/harness/and ecu in one shot. I had the motor pulled and rebuilt for $675.00 dollars at a local shop this included head work (port and polish)I bought a used VJ20 turbo of ebay from an old T-Bird and had that rebuilt for $120.00 bucks (they also polished it for me)a $90.00 2 stage boost controller was added and a front mount intercooler from a 89 probe gt (45 bucks from a local wreck yard)I sent the ecu out to what i believe is the only place that re-maps this ecu and for $265.00 they tuned it up for me. I got a blow off valve for christmas from my girl because i had this project in mind, ( I love her) Next was putting the motor in, everything fit right in, I only changed one of the mounts and a few sensors over. I didn't need to change the distributor because I was using the ecu that came from the engine. the knock sensor needed to be wired to the ecu like the BPT but that took 25 minutes. also if you use the stock B6-T tranny it will fit mine did. the stock fuel system is good for about 20 lbs of boost so i just changed the fuel pressure regulator, and fuel pump, $160.00 dollars. and the last thing i did was had a local shop make me a 2 1/4 inch turbo back custom exhaust with free flow cat and stainless muffler $275.00 bucks. the car dynoed to 196hp with 189lbs of torque at 9psi and 227 hp and 217lbs of torque at 15psi not to bad for a total of around $2,150.00 bucks oh and those capri xr2's in parts are very rare, I got almost $800.00 bucks just by parting it out on ebay. so really this swap only cost me around $1,400.00. I understand that a BPT can ultimately make a lot more power then a B6-T, but 227hp out of a 2300 pound mx-3 is fast enough, you wouldn't believe how many mustangs and cameros I've pissed of and wowed, I don't even believe it yet, lol, well happy swapping and email me if you have any questions I'll be glad to help maximiz456@aol.com thanks guys, later.
