BPT shopping list?

Post by MXTreme »

Hi again everyone, I posted like, twice and went back to lurking, because frankly... I'm still saving.
I've been thinking about the BPT swap and this is what I know that I need. Can y'all think of anything else that I'm missing? Any help, corrections, or better ideas will be greatly apreciated.
BPT (GTX) engine from Corksport- $1099
ACT clutch kit for a 90-94 protege from corksport- $331
intercooler- ??
GReddy BOV from raretrick.com- $216.35
misc. hoses(master cylinder, waste-gate, bov)
90-94 Mazda Protege LX(DOHC) items needed:
transmission -??
transmission mounts and brackets -??
flywheel-autozone
drive-shafts-autozone
jack-shaft-autozone
pilot bearing- not so sure
throw-out bearing- not so sure
Suggested Items:
new belts(timing, alternator, power-steering-a/c)-auto zone
new spark plugs and wires-auto zone
fuel filter- auto zone
oil filter- auto zone
new motor mounts- ??
Haltech e6k- hitman.com for $1800
upgraded fuel pump- RX-7 fuel pump for less than $300
boost gauge
a/f gauge
egt gauge -no idea on these 3

Looking at 4 grand with just the parts I do know off hand. Is this right? I hope I'm mistaken... if not, I'll need to go drive around near a cop til he hits me...

i think there's a groupbuy on groupbuycenter.com for a clutch kit. corksport sells the pilot bearing and t/o bearing seperately...which makes it cost more. but yeah, get the one for the 93-97 v6 mx6.
also, that price from hitman is in australian currency.
when you get the tranny(junkyard) get the flywheel, jack-shaft, side tranny mount bracket(the one under the battery tray)
Fast imports only come on two wheels.

Here's what I suggest.
If you're switching tranny's to the Protege, heres what brackets you'll need.
The mount under the battery tray is a two piece bracket. You'll need both. You can dissasemble the actuall mount from the mx-3 where the rubber pivots on the bracket. The bracket has a long shaft running through the rubber mount with a nut on the end. Take the Mx-3 bracket off and use the Protege bracket 90-94, Mercury Tracer, or Ford Escort. I have one from an Escort. You need the front tranny bracket as well. ALL Mx-3 rubber mounts will work with the BP, just these 2 brackets from the Protege must be swapped. The Mx-3 passenger side mount, and rear bracket and mount will work with the BP tranny and engine.
Don't need a wastegate.
An intercooler would be a good idea.
ACT is a good clutch, and you must adjust the freeplay on the pedel to make it last.
You can use the entire brake booster vaccum line from a Protege. It bolts right in.
It would be a good idea to get the pilot bearing and release bearing. There cheap, even from the dealer.
New engine mounts would be a good idea. Mazdaspeeds are excellent.
Only gauges ya need are EGT and boost. A/F is optional.
Fuel injectors from a turbo Eclipse are optional.
Fuel pump from a 93-96 Rx-7 will fit with minor hacking to the Mx-3 fuel pump bracket.
If you go with the Haltech, Ebay usaually has good auctions on the E6k's. I Picked mine up for a little over 1200 shipped to my door. It did'nt come with the boost control solenoid, so you'll need to ask for one, an extra $80. Pick up a new 4 wire O2 sensor while your at it. Again, cheap.
Hope that helps. :)
[ June 25, 2003: Message edited by: jaydog5678 ]

i agree with everything except taking apart the tranny mount. you just need the bracket. the actual mounts are the same. also, i believe the front and rear tranny mounts can be used from the mx3.

I was going to go with an RX-7 fuel pump for my swap but I was told to get the Walbro fuel pump instead because I got it for 130 and I hear its just as good.

Thanks alot guys, I prolly won't have enough cash to do the switch for a while. I need to get the engine, then refurbish it and stuff. I hate to ask another question in the same post, but what is the proper first start for a new engine? I mean, I remember that you have to replace the oil to remove shards, but I don't remember the entire regimen. Thanks again.
