To touch on hybrids... They are Ghay and a complete waist of time money and engineering resources. They will phase out in the next decade or two. The ONLY real alternative to petro is CNG (compressed natural gas) for the short term and Hydrogen for the future. Hydrogen is made from water and the only pollutant is that, ... water. The US is so Oil heavy and mad that it will be decades until the US finally starts to adopt hydrogen like several other countries are now. You get almost the same power and better fuel economy and it takes almost nothing to convert your petro car over to hydrogen.
