Re: Driver's side Axle replacement didn't solve my problem.

The very last thing I did before the vibration and clunking started was replace my harmonic balancer and depower my A/C compressor... Naturally, I also removed the power steering belt. Anybody guess where I'm going with this?

How do I go about diagnosing the power steering system? I don't even know where to begin, but I have a feeling this is my problem.
I am lost and confused with what your problem is... If it feels like something is binding when your driving straight at all speeds why are you chasing your power steering system?? Or anything to do with the motor for that matter???

MrMazda92 wrote:Seriously though, how in the living hell do you force these things in? I turned it, twisted it, tried every single variable direction on the pinch ring(literally, changed it 15 degrees at a time, seeing if there was a "sweet spot" that the little bastard liked. No go, I spent over an hour trying to force an axle into the transmission. Help? Either you guys do it, or a shrink does, because I'm done. -.-
Next time get some good thick wheel bearing grease and put some on the c-clip... get the c-clip to sit as centered on the axle as possible... With your knuckle still attatched to you strut assembly install the axle into the knuckle... Do up the axle nut... now insert the axle into the transmission... twist and wiggle to see if you can get the axle to spline into the trans.. If you feel it hit the clip take to hands on the knuckle and give it a good shove, this should pop the axle into the trans...

The feeling isn't that of anything binding, so much as rubbing. It literally feels like one of the tires is rubbing against something.

Reverse up to 20 MPH there is no problem turning either direction.

Driving forward under 15 MPH the vibration is barely noticeable. Driving forward at ANY speed, while turning right, and the problem goes away entirely.

Turning the wheel to the right, past 12:00(i.e. 12:30 or 1 o'clock position) stops the vibration, no matter the speed of the car.

I don't even know where to begin with this anymore.

Power steering system wont have an affect on this kind of problem... It doesn't care if you are moving in reverse or forwards when turning.. It has no care if you are turning left or right, and has no play in any kind of vibrations when driving straight...

You could have something bent or rubbing... I would start by jacking the car up.. placing jackstand carefully under the control arms and lowering the car down on them.. This way you can get the car to ride height with the wheels off the ground.. (It can be tricky to do this though) Then I would start by rotating the tires by hand with the wheels straight and feel for anything funny... Then I would crank the tires all the way one way and rotate them... And then back the other way and rotate them... I would be doing this while having a good look for anything rubbing, out of wack ect... This might be a little beyond what you can look though.. You might want to have a shop look at it..

I wish I could do that, honestly, but I'm short a jackstand right now. :( One managed to walk off somewhere, it probably had help to be honest. -.-

I'll tow it to GoodYear on monday, since it's close and they'll eyeball it for free.
Thanks guys.
