Is that all there is to be said about valve issues? (and if so, why even bother between piston rings vs valve problems? Pistons are for sure not worth getting into, as I understand it.)

Re: How to do a proper compression test
So basically, it's cheaper or easier to swap for a BP than to replace valve related parts? That's a bummer. Can't afford an engine, and was hoping I wouldn't have to run on 3 cyls for another year or more....

Re: How to do a proper compression test
Pistons should be simpler as far as DIY work goes. It depends on what valvetrain items you're replacing. I much prefer replacing piston rings to valvetrain, granted that is with the engine pulled. I haven't attempted either with one in the car, so I can't speak on that front.Polonius wrote:So basically, it's cheaper or easier to swap for a BP than to replace valve related parts? Re: How to do a proper compression test
well, as long as it runs you can drive it, it just won't pass emissions, and be lacking (moreso) in power.
My first B6 ran pretty well on 2 cylinders, but it would stall occasionally. B6 motors are absolute champions, I've never actually seen anyone blow one.
To repair it you'd at least need to buy a new valve(s) and borrow a spring compression tool, and have those seats reground. All in all it'd probably cost you more than a BP motor. I found my BP for $300 already pulled, and I can get motors from my favorite yard for $150.

Re: How to do a proper compression test
Holy crap! I looked on ebay last year, I think, and engines were more like $1500+.... Guess I'll go for the swap then! Just not til spring.
I need my car this winter and would prefer to have time to take it slow. It's already passed inspection, so I could really just run it as is forever.
Can I source you for the engine and contact you again in the spring about it? I'm 500 km north of Edmonton, and the Pick'n'Pull there is the only place I know to get stuff. I don't think I can pull the engine and everything else I'd need in one afternoon, and I want one that's in decent shape.

Re: How to do a proper compression test
You need to look more local than me. Edmonton/Calgary will have a BP for you at a Picknpull somewhere.

I know you believe that you understand what you think I said but I'm sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

I could go through and delete the BS, but people will only read the first post anyway....

Re: How to do a proper compression test
Sorry, figured it was on-topic because it was basically "what to do with the results of a bad compression test".
