Timing Belt/Water Pump

Post by Ribsmasher-au »

Hey guys i currently have a 93 30x i just had a awfull time changing the water pump i had to remove the timing belt to get the new one back on and did not mark the belt or anything (i know im stupid) was just so frustrated with all the crap i went thru but anyway i got the belt back on with great effort without any of the gears moving i hope but anyway the car won't start does not seem like it's firing at all the moter just turns it has spark etc could this be due to the way the timing belt went back on? is there anything i can do to fix this?

Your cams are out and you will have to realign them to the crank, there is little arrows on top of the heads and little lines on the cam gears, make sure their lined up and the crank pulley has similar marks that you will have to check as well. Your in a lot of trouble did you consult your shop manual? There is very detailed instructions in the factory shop manual on doing timing belt installation I did it when I put my ZE in and it was quite tricky.

I had no instructions at all, i only just found this forum so had no guides on how to do this. But im guessing i will have to pull it all apart again (cry) reason for doing it myself is the local workshop was going to charge me around $1200 to change the water pump which is only a $100 part.

It's a lot of work that's why they charge 1200, well make sure all the marks are lined up and you should be OK. Also there are a lot of forum members here that are probably more knowledgeable than I am could walk you through this.

Believe me i see why they charge so much now would of been a bit easier if the engine was out my hands are cut everywhere from working it such a small space.

Cheers guys i just checked and it all lines up to the marks i was very carefull when putting it on not to move any of the wheels but it still shows no sign of starting? The belt is very tight as i could not work out the tensioner (before i found this forum) could that affect it?

Remember all your plugs?

If it ran before the timing belt, but not after, you did the timing belt wrong.

Yeah it has to be, are the marks on the valve covers or the actual block? Also if i get the engine to top dead centre will the bottom pulley be lined up and just adjust the two cam ones? only asking because i dont have the tool to remove the bottom pulley.
