higher profile tires
My 93 gs has 205/55-15 tires on it right now. I am looking at a set of yokahamas for the rear that are 205/60-15. Not too much difference right? Should be ok? There looks to be enough clearance...but just want to be sure.

Re: higher profile tires
They're gonna be ok. However, if you're gonna use 2 different tire sizes, remember to always put same size tires on each axle. Otherwise, not only you may experience a pull to one side, but you will be giving your differential a beating.
Besides that, remember, if you put the bigger tires in the front of the car, you may be negatively affecting the car's high speed stability, and your speedometer will be off.

Re: higher profile tires
Thanks guys,
I picked up the tires last night and will be putting them on tonight. I'm getting a loud humming sound in the car, gets really loud between 60-80kph, then it goes away. Sounds like its coming from the rear. So since my back tires are pooched anyway (quite bald in the centers) I figured i'd start by replacing them. Hoping its not wheel bearings, but will check them while the tires are off.

Re: higher profile tires
Well, sorry to tell you this, but, if your tires are bald, they will make very little noise, so my money is on the bearings...

Re: higher profile tires
Does the 93 gs have abs?
You're probably right, I'm sure the bearings are the culprit. Needed new tires anyway.
but to get the right bearings I need to know if its got abs or not. Is it automatically abs if there are rear discs? Or do I need to look for a sensor?

Re: higher profile tires
? It doesn't matter as far as I know.
No, rear discs means GS, not nesc. ABS.
You should know if you have ABS. Can you lock the tires with your brakes? Is there a wire as well as a hose going down to each wheel? is there a little toothwheel on the outer CV joint?

Re: higher profile tires
Yes, it does have abs. I found the hose/wire going to the disc.
The rear hubs with abs have the toothed gear looking thing on them....no abs, no toothed thing.
At least thats what I seem to be seeing in pics of the different hubs.
Every parts place I've phoned has asked if it has abs..and the abs ones are almost twice the cost of non abs....figures. lol

Re: higher profile tires
Yep, and that's precisely the difference. ABS equipped mx-3's have the reluctor ring (the toothed thing) on the cv axles in the front, but, since there are no CV axles in the rear, they put the rings on the spindles.Haley wrote: The rear hubs with abs have the toothed gear looking thing on them....no abs, no toothed thing.

If you need to get new spindles, make sure the reluctor rings are installed really tight on them. Do not buy spindles on which you can take the rings off with your fingers.

Re: higher profile tires
You can easily remove the tone rings from your old hubs and install them on new non-ABS hubs.
I did it in about 10 minutes.

Re: higher profile tires
Or just remove your ABS entirely and buy the non ABS stuff
ABS is part of this "revolution" where cars begin to slowly transform into trains.
This is how its going:
You approach your car and unlock it with a button. It beeps to let you know it hears you.
You get in, and the seat automatically detects how fat you are, as compared to your wife, and adjusts the seat to your profile.
The stereo shows "HELLO, WORLD!" on its little display as you push the engine start button.
As the car cranks as long as it decides is proper and fires up, it begins to tell you how hot it is outside, and a whole bunch of other s--- you already knew if you had a brain, (IE, "Ice Possible" warning in GM's... no s--- man, there's 4' of snow.)
Now, you turn on the GPS to remind you how to get to work. You start driving and it tells you where to go.
It determines its slippery and modulates your throttle application digitally, since you're driving by wire. A Prius will drive you over a cliff at 100 if you're not respectful.
When you turn it thinks you're dying, so it clutches your differential on you and nearly kills you as it adjusts to what it thinks you want.
When you brake and it thinks its slippery, it will pump the pedal 20 times a second (since you can't do that yourself, you can't even learn how to threshold brake which is more effective).
If you get stuck along the way you press your ONSTAR button and some underpaid douche comes and changes a tire for you, since that might get your dress pant knees dirty, and you don't know how to use a wrench or jack or even what those are exactly, forget about where to find them...
When your GPS has informed you that you've arrived, your car proceeds to park itself.
Your IQ is now 10 points lower, and you will slowly morph into a total douche who cuts people off without looking, speeds, and is in general a totally ignorant a--hole who owns every road on the GD planet.

Re: higher profile tires
Wow, it's been so long since I drove a non ABS car I'd forgotten about threshold braking... I also love how you can easily skid with ABS, just by hitting the brakes completely to the floor. It's a jokeRyan wrote:When you brake and it thinks its slippery, it will pump the pedal 20 times a second (since you can't do that yourself, you can't even learn how to threshold brake which is more effective).

Prius' are limited to ~105 MPH, so please for the love of God don't drive one that fast, EVER.Ryan wrote:It determines its slippery and modulates your throttle application digitally, since you're driving by wire. A Prius will drive you over a cliff at 100 if you're not respectful.

This comes to mind:
"Can you explain why you were doing 65 in a 25?"
"I was drag racing."
"In a prius?"
"I don't win a lot."
