just a question? why would you want to go threw the hassle of making a mx3 gs even slower by dropping in a b6de over a bp? it wouldnt be much harder on the brakes/suspension as the gs was designed around a 130hp engine. if your concerned about gas milage/maintenance costs wouldnt it be cheaper to just by a mx3 rs and save your self the time/hassle/money of finding parts and rigging everything up. surely the swap would cost more money then the difference in gas milage over the course of a couple years?

most people tend to swap a v6 into the gs and a 4 cylinder into the rs as those are the platforms the cars are designed around and are the cheapest/ easiest swaps. :?

its also cheaper/easier to swap the suspension upgrades/ brake upgrades from the gs into the rs then it is to swap the motors...

It was about availability of shell or entire cars.

The good:
After sending many messages on several craigslist MX3's in a four state area and shopping for about 6 months, I finally got a email reply on a '94 RS 1.6L man trans, body has 179k mi like I really wanted for $700 w/ silver ext and black int. So a couple hours later a call Sunday evening form same guy about 7 pm. I just could not find one local so I had the boys adapt the tow package light wiring plug to 4 wire flat real quick, lead footed it in our '94 Villager recent fix (less that 50 miles) which had broke crank snout. We went to larger crank snout upgrade and up to St Louis. Drove 800 miles & 13 hours round trip over night and picked up the above silver one with the B6-DE engine that had been changed out at about 76k with a low mi engine, engine bas been on a mobile 1 diet for 6 years. Had new Dr LH cv shaft, new radiator, flush & wp protectant, lots of other good maintenance. Paint otherwise of below ugly items is surprisingly very good. Glass is all very good. Has very minimal rust can be taken care of easily. 2 new yoko tires & 2 nearly new Goodrich's 185-65-14's. Recent alignment. With gas I have $850 in it total now. Spare and jack kit looked good and present.

The bad:
She has a dead used replacement distributor, no battery, missing headlight HID bulbs but ballast kit left installed, Hatch lock needs some TLC. It has factory AC (Yea!) but needs charged or the like no prob for me I did auto AC for a living before aircraft.

The ugly:
She has and a large fender bender on the pass side casusing pass door not to s--- enough and messed up the door seal, some easy to fix surface damage crunched dr side frt bumper issue. mismatch fender hood height on dr side, needs a radio head unit and has high powered stereo amps and the like, Kenwood eq, I need to unload or trade that expensive stuff for a just decent in dash unit. Missing 1 hub cap other one id damaged badly. Headlights need yellow polished out. Possibly lost the outer cv boot on trip down there was red synthetic translucent gel lube on the dr side of the car after 300 miles and in both dr side wheel wells, we have seen red, green,
black moly, and grey grease in these boot kits, will verify the shaft soon

Now I need to start a compatibility list for the dist:
We need to order the correct distributor to get her running. Anyone have one laying around I can use?
My son can not find the distributor casting number (12 digits according to this Ebay item http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BRAND-NE ... 56441cf8c7) we allegedly need for the correct application. Is this number on the base of the mount flange and must be removed to see it?
Or is there a good authoritative guide for distributors on the mx3 1.6 DOHC 2nd gen?
Looks like the 92-93 SOHC is different and not compatible but am not sure.

Grocery list wise what we need in order of urgency 1st two items will get us on the road the rest is icing on the cake:
1. '94 1.6 DOHC distributor.
2. Qty 2 hid bulbs. Bulb type? (also have to find out if its a combo hi/lo unit 1st or just low).
3. 90 amp alternator upgrade popular fix for efficiency due to oem anemic 60 amp alt (out of mx3 1.8 V6 mx6 v6)? Saw it somewhere on the site.
4. Stereo head unit, front speakers I think and maybe rear, have to look around for where they may 5. be hidden. I know the front tweeters are bad.
6. Qty 2 hub caps.
7. May need engine gasket kit as the front bottom pass side of the engine looked like I saw old leakage when hooking up the tow bar. Saw valve cover & distributor bas gasket leakage also.
8. Pass door seal.
9. Dr door handle well cup has bottom area for screw busted out. Likely plastic welder epoxy fix.
10. Center hinged lower console broken at hinge. Will likely plastic welder epoxy this together.

Donations of your not needed above (parts) to clean out your garage/barn are accepted :D with thankfulness. Otherwise I have to wail until next payday.
Will post a pic soon.

Checked their prices. Higher than ebay.
But after research I have decided to go with the remote mod junkyard style here written up in the 4 cyl FAQ:
http://www.mx-3.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=69706
with external coil and ignition module due to how many of these I have seen at the local LKU self service yard, and with our recent experience with it in a 95 Escort LX we sold and still maintain. Salvage has a 50% off sale in less than 2 weeks which starts same date as payday.

The mod parts can come from these vehicles state 4goto and lazzer408:

Any distributor off any model Mazda/ford with either a 1.5L,1.6L,1.8L,1.9L (i.e. ford escort, mercury tracer, Mazda 323/protege) as long as the distributor has a 4 wire lead going into the distributor and four plug wires coming out.
See their write up or link above for more details.

This mod/swap will make maintaining the ignition system much cheaper and solve availability issues even if we get stranded somewhere.
