Finally able to run my car after two years but ran into issues. Alternator smoked, engine noise and power steering pump issue.
Can anybody tell what this engine noise is? Also in part 1 there is this slight sucking sound coming from the power steering pump area.
Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6BS9eZgf3I
Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVGAKN7eaxI
And does this sound like the power steering pump is defective?

Thanks for any info.
Engine noise and power steering noise?
Re: Engine noise and power steering noise?
Whoa the HLA noise is pretty bad, but not too much to worry about. Something else is grinding away pretty bad and needs to be identified. I can't specifically identify it from the video because the grinding could be a belt driven accessory or it could be internal to the engine. A mechanics stethoscope would help to pinpoint the noise source if it is not obvious in front of the car.
It might be the power steering pump or other belt driven bearing is bad. The power steering pump is low on the engine and up against the firewall on the passenger side. The noise in your power steering pump video is the belt slipping on the power steering pump. If the pump is OK then you just need to replace the belt or tighten the one you have.
Good luck.

Re: Engine noise and power steering noise?
Thanks dav. Well the knocking noise was less when i tried to run it today. I tried to check the sucking noise by removing the accessory belt(no more sucking noise) but when i put it back i got a loud squealing noise this time. I think i just didn't tighten the tensioner.
One thing i noticed was that the pressure switch connector was removed. After a while of reconnecting it, the noise is gone from steering the wheel left and right but the sucking noise was still there(i wonder if the noise would go away if i left it on for awhile) Ill have to readjust the belt and hopefully it wont give that loud squealing noise.
Yah i saw the p/s pump on the left. I actually took the bolts off the p/s pump assembly(based on manual) so i can easily reinstall the timing cover. I hope theres nothing wrong with the p/s pump because 2,000 miles before a mechanic supposedly changed it(based on receipt).
Anyways ill try to make another video with accessory belt removed and hopefully you guys can check if i have more to worry about. There was also small amount of smoke coming out of the exhaust.

Re: Engine noise and power steering noise?
After sitting have you done an oil change? I used AMSOIL and have virtually no HLA noise now. Your belts should be properly adjusted before trouble shooting. No more than 1/2 inch deflection when you press on your belt. Check on-line manual for more accurate measurements. There does seem to be a noise coming from a pulley. Can't say which one of course. Oil from the exhaust? Is it all the time or just on start up?

I know you believe that you understand what you think I said but I'm sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Re: Engine noise and power steering noise?
Yup. i changed the oil to Mobil1 10W-30 and new filter before starting it. Also poured in Seafoam in fuel tank. I didn't have a ruler and was so eager to turn it on that time so yeah i will recheck it and make sure to set it right. And it was a small amount of smoke that was coming out. Is it possible that it may be the old fuel? You guys ever use tension gauge? So hard to check the deflection with so little space. i may pick up a mechanic's stethoscope too since they don't seem to be that expensive. One thing I forgot to note was that there was a very small drops of oil leaking from above the oil filter (oil cooler?) right after i first start the car.
Notes:
-I have changed the bearing on both accessory tensioner pulleys (203FF bearing from kragen).
-Bought a new battery.
-Alternator was smoking so just took that belt off for now(will get one from NAPA).
-I may also try to flush the p/s fluid because I don't think the mechanic changed it as it was not included with the invoice.

Re: Engine noise and power steering noise?
Don't worry about the belt tensioner. You can have a little deflection when you press hard on the belt - try to reach the belt where it is longest between pulleys. Remember to tighten the tensioner and tighten down the pulley once it has been adjusted.
If your steering pump is relatively new then most of the steering fluid is also new so I wouldn't do anything except top it off if it is low. MX3 uses Dexron auto transmission fluid for power steering.
Alternator smoking? Was the belt slipping there too or could that be the grinding / bad bearing noise?

Re: Engine noise and power steering noise?
Well the car was sent to a mechanic and supposedly the P/S pump was replaced based on the invoice. I would think that they changed and added new P/S fluid in there too and it would show up in the invoice. But nothing in the invoice about it. We'll I will recheck everything tomorrow and see how it goes. If ever, i'll just buy a new P/S pump.
As for the alternator, yah it was smoking. Now that I think about it, it could be because I messed up on the belt tension. I will recheck those too and turn it on. And no the noise is not from there since I had the belt for that removed the whole time. Thanks.

Re: Engine noise and power steering noise?
Just an update. I replaced the P/S pump and the weird noise is gone. Oil leak was from the oil pressure switch which is fixed. Alternator replaced. HLA tick is now gone too. Right now it just stinks which is probably from the old gas burning.
Now i need to flush the transmission fluid and replace with Redline MT-90. And also replace the rusted rotors and pads and flush the brake fluid. Any recommended brake fluid brand for our car? I heard synthetic isn't good to use?
