Oil filter substitution and bypass PSI

Post by Daninski »

I'm looking for a long life filter for AMSOIL. I have AMSOIL in my ZE and it's working so well I want to keep using it but it's expensive so I plan to buy directly from the company. Problem is filters have differrent by-pass PSI ratings. As an example, the corvette ZR1 filter OEM is 20 PSI where as the Mazda filter by-pass if only 14 PSI. These numbers are set out by the manufacturer so even if the ZR1 filter has more/better filtering capacity than the mazda OEM specs filter it has a much higher by-pass psi so in the event of cold weather starts and a by-pass is called for could we damage our engines using a different oil filter?
I presently have a Hastings filter on my engine and want to buy a filter that's as good as i can get to compliment the oil.

I know you believe that you understand what you think I said but I'm sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

I wouldn't sweat the bypass pressure. Cold start PSI ranged from 50-100 PSI, so just don't get one with a relief over that.

The higher the better, really. The pump can handle the pressure, it is only the volume it cannot make up for. More filtering media area = better flow.

Just find whatever suits your fancy. If you like flirting with the parts counter girl, you need a filter with an M20x1.5 thread and a 3" gasket. Corvette is one option, turbo talon is another.
