Manual Transmission Swap linkage questions

Post by maryjanessrt4 »

I'm going to start collecting parts tomorrow for converting my auto GS to a manual. I was just wondering if there are any parts that I can take from a 4 cylinder like shift linkage, pedal assembly etc. I dont have any V6 mx-3s around but I'm planning on snagging a 323 trans tomorrow....do any of the 323 parts work? Thanks

323's are all 4cylinder in North America. The 323 transmission will not fit your V6 engine.

You need a G25M-R tranny from either an MX-3, 93-97 MX-6, 626 or Probe GT. There are 2 parts of the shifter linkage. The Stabilizer Bar and the Shifter Bar. The Stabilizer bar (which bolts to the floor on one end and the transmission case on the other) is the same from any MX-3 and I have also used one from a 2nd gen Protege, but the Shifter Bar (which connects the bottom of the shift lever to the shift shaft on the transmission) is different from GS to RS. The bracket is spaced slightly differently and the RS bar will interfere on the GS.

As for the pedal assembly and other parts you'll need I can't say for sure as I've never done the swap.

Wyt, I think you might have it backwards. I think the stabilizer bar doesn't fit, and the shifter bar does.

Not in my experience. I believe I have an RS stabilizer bar in my SE right now. And when the shifter fell out of my last GS I replaced the stabilizer bar from a Protege.

So I've found an MX-6 trans. I'm just under time constraints right now and I need to know if this project is even possible to complete by august. My biggest concerns are the Pedal assembly and the shift linkage. Are these parts a dealer might have? Or are they parts I can obtain from a junk yard. (understanding that the previous statements commented on the linkage). And I'm getting mixed signals as far as the axels go. Should i just replace both sides? Thanks in advance.

I'm not sureif the automatic pedal assembly has to come out or if you just need to install the clutch pedal. You will need the axels from a standard MX-3 as the MX-3 track width is different from the MX-6. Neither the MX-6 nor the auto MX-3 axels are the right length.

The linkage is easy to get from a junk yard car. Find a standard MX-3, remove the trim around the shifter, remove the four nuts on the floor. Push the linkage through the floor by tapping on the tips of the studs. DO NOT PUSH DOWN ON THE SHIFTER!!! You'll tear the sifter out of the isolating rubber housing dealie. Get under the car and remove the nut on the stud that secures the stabilizer to the tranny housing. Remove the bolt that secures the shift linkage to the transmission shift shaft. Wiggle the whole thing out from above the exhaust. Make sure you save the bushings and stuff.

The pedals are a bit of a pain because they're under the dash. but like I said I'm not sure exactly what has to come out or what.

The axles are a little tougher just because removing the hub nut in a junk yard is near to impossible. On the upside, remanufactured axles are not that expensive and in some cases they have a lifetime warranty. Get them at the parts store. Used ones are going to be in bad shape anyway.

Like most things once you have all the parts the work is pretty easy, just time consuming and sometimes really annoying.
